Reading Log Instructions

Dear Parents,

Reading to your child is very much encouraged at an early age. It helps your child gain the sense that letters make up words, words make up sentences, and sentences can make up stories. This is a pre-reading skill that needs to be taught. As we will not be done with learning the letters and sounds until February or March, I am not asking you to make your child read to you. However, I am asking you to help your child with some pre-reading skills. Some things you can do while you read to your child: Take a “picture walk;” talk about the title of the book and then go through it page by page and talk about what you see in the pictures and what they think the story may be about. After that, start by reading the title, author, and illustrator (we use those terms in kindergarten). As you read the story, point to each word as you read it and make sure to pause for a while at each ending punctuation. If you come across a word you don’t think your child knows the meaning of, ask them what they think it means, and then explain if they aren’t sure. After you have finished the story, talk about the sequence (what happened first, second, last, etc). Also, don’t forget to give them a chance to tell you the words if you come across some sight words or simple words. Your child has the chance of earning four free personal pan pizzas from Pizza Hut (one each for the next 4 months, and maybe more if I can get more coupons). To earn this coupon, fill out the reading log with the 13 titles you read and who read them to your child. Turn this form in any time during that month, I will stamp it and return it with the coupon. It is important that you turn it in the month that is stated at the top, or I am not able to give you the coupon (Book It guidelines). If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.

HAPPY READING!Lori 
