Lloyd’s List Shipping Top 100 – 2010. Top 100 most influential people in shipping at 2010

Every industry has its movers and shakers, but few remain as personality driven as shipping. The fact that it is often called a small world may seem odd, given that more than 90% of world trade is carried by shipping and that, in terms of annual turnover, the industry is immense. But it rings true in the sense that many of the key figures in the shipping industry know each other. If they haven’t met, they certainly know each other by reputation.

In shipping, one of the few remaining industries in which your word is your bond, the character and reputation of shipping leaders is a matter of constant discussion.

But influence is an elusive and relative concept when you start drilling down into the mechanics of the industry and its diversity of sectoral interests.

While we would like to tell you that we developed a sophisticated series of algorithms to assess objectively the influence and power of all the industry personalities we considered for this list, we can’t. We make no excuses for that. The truth is that this is a highly subjective assessment born out of months of heated discussions within the Lloyd’s List newsroom, and it is based on our collective expertise and personal opinions.

Ranking the influence of a containership owner against a competition regulator or a pirate was never going to be an exact science and this supplement is therefore undoubtedly flawed in the eyes of many.

We are under no illusions that we have produced a list that everyone will agree with. No doubt there will be entries that raise eyebrows in some quarters while prompting derision in others and we are well aware that the list has notable omissions that simply would not fit into the small space that 100 entries provides. However, we hope that we have also produced an engaging and convincing series of arguments to support our view of the industry.

Our assessment, biased as it is, represents an important and illuminating study of influence in an industry where the power base is rapidly shifting and the personalities that make it such a vibrant place to work can make a real difference through their vision, skill and sheer force of personality.

Last year this list would have looked different – and we fully expect the landscape to have changed significantly when we tackle this again in the future.

We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed compiling it.
