ANIMAL CONTROL/FACILITY ATTENDANT II
JOB DESCRIPTION
DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Animal Control Officer, performs a variety of duties related to the enforcement of the animal control regulations and bylaws, including patrolling for and pickup of stray animals, animal care, issuance of dog licences and collection of fees. Cleans the Animal Shelter Facility and responds to and directs public inquiries, both by telephone and in person.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Assist with enforcing the Animal Control Bylaw and dog licencing regulations, investigate complaints, patrol, catch and transport stray or vicious animals to the Animal Shelter, and feed, water and care for animals while in custody;
- Sell dog licences, collect fees, issue receipts and assist with the preparation of all necessary paperwork and monthly reports;
- Apply euthanasia to animals, as required, including determining correct dosage, and administer as humanely as possible, without additional stress to the animals;
- Assist with the operation of the Crematorium, including incineration, processing and packaging of remains;
- Handle livestock, injured and diseased animals, and transport accordingly;
- Clean the Animal Shelter, maintaining a high level of sanitation throughout;
- Order and pick up supplies for the Animal Shelter, as required;
- Evening, weekend and on-call work required;
- Assist in maintaining the Animal Shelter filing system;
- Reconcile cash float and prepare deposits;
- Provide reception duties for the Animal Shelter including operating a mobile radio phone and dealing with the public in a friendly and proficient manner;
- Other related duties, as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Secondary school graduation;
- Minimum of one year's related experience and a sound working knowledge of the methods and equipment used in the care, handling, and euthanasia of vicious and stray animals;
- Demonstrated ability to work with, and genuine caring for animals and livestock;
- Demonstrated ability to operate related vehicles and equipment;
- Good working knowledge of City Animal Control Bylaws and related regulations;
- Computer experience, preferably in a Windows environment, with Word and Excel;
- Ability to perform clerical and bookkeeping tasks, handle and deposit cash receipts;
- Janitorial experience;
- Ability to work independently and to accomplish tasks and assignments;
- Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public;
- Good written and oral communication skills;
- First Aid Training and an ability to administer first aid to animals;
- Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
