Each year, over 200,000 children are sold into slavery in West and Central Africa, such as Ghana, a country located on the western coast of Africa. For the past two years, the students of Metuchen High School has teamed up with the International Organization of Migration (IOM) to rescue Ghanaian child slaves, varying in age from 5-14, reunite them with their families, and provided them with an education.
Forced to work in the fishing villages all day, these child slaves are abused and underfed, forced to sleep in cramped dirt huts. Not only to they exist under such harsh conditions, but they must risk their lives every day, fishing in the dangerous lakeVolta, where many have drowned in the past, or face a beating at the hands of their masters.
The IOM not only saves these children from slavery, but they also help the slave owners find a new way of life through micro-loans to purchase equipment or enter a new trade, rather than relying on forced child labor. The program also aids the families of former child slaves by helping them attain a better financial situation, so that they will never again have to consider selling their own children.
Last year, our efforts raised over $23,000, and led directly to the freedom and rehabilitation of 5 slaves. This year, we are building off that success. MetuchenHigh School’s Political Institute class, led by history teacher Mr. Evan Robbins, will host a 5k walk. This “Walk for Ghana” will be held on Sunday, June 7th, 2009, at 12:30 PM. The walk will start and end from MetuchenHigh School, located at 400 Grove Avenue, Metuchen, NJ.
We ask for your contribution to support those participating in the walk. We are asking for donations, of which ninety percent goes directly to the program in Ghana to be used toward the rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration of trafficked children. We ask that you register as many sponsors as possible, and fill out the form provided.
