The essential purpose of Trail West is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to families. This is largely accomplished at Young Life camps through activities that illustrate certain aspects of Christ's life and teachings. Each activity conducted by Young Life staff in the camp environment is intended to convey a specific message about Christ, in a manner that is coordinated with other activities, leading to a continual spiritual experience during the week.
The duties of the Guest Services intern are an integral part of the spiritual program of the camp. The intern must be able to convey a sense of Christ-like hospitality and concern as he/she relates to guests and staff. All staff members are expected to model Christian principles and the standards of Young Life at work and outside of work; staff members must represent Young Life positively and professionally within the local community.
The purpose of this position is to assist with hosting as well as all aspects of the guest services department under the supervision of the Guest Services Coordinator.
Essential Duties

  1. Minister to, direct and encourage guests and staff in a manner consistent with Christian principles, Young Life’s mission and the spiritual program of the camp.
  2. Convey a sense of Christ-like hospitality and concern for guests and staff.
  3. Coordinate and provide medical services necessary on the property. The EMT/Registered Nurse coordinates with the camp medical director to provide emergency first aid care, triage and stabilization, and infirmary care for guests and staff during summer assignments, as assigned by the property.
  4. Work within the procedures established in the infirmary guidelines and Young Life’s Medical Services Program.
  5. Provide or assist the provision of medical care for emergency/urgent and routine needs.
  6. Maintain the camp infirmary and first aid kits both with supplies and also in a clean and sanitary manner.
  7. Complete and file all paperwork required for anyone treated on the property – including the infirmary log, accident reports, insurance papers, and other incident reports which may be necessary to completely document any medical situations that have occurred on the property.
  8. Maintain a follow-up system documenting all the cases that were treated outside the camp facility or treated on the camp facility beyond basic first aid. Provide follow-up on recommendations for further treatment with the patient’s leader and the property manager.
  9. Immediately inform the guest services coordinator or host on duty of any medical treatment being given off the property, ie. Any individual going to the hospital.
  10. Prior to the beginning of summer camping, contact local EMS services and introduce yourself and familiarize yourself with their procedures, response time, etc.
    Work with other staff and camp leadership to accomplish the weekly camp program.
  11. Must have full knowledge of all equipment and supplies used for the effective operation of all health and safety services.
  12. Inspect equipment and supplies daily or at prescribed intervals for safety/healthful standards.Immediately remove any supply or piece of equipment which may in any way present a safety or health hazard.
  13. Must be on call at night in case of emergency, typically six nights a week.
  14. Assist the assign team, program and speaker with needs daily.
  15. Interact with guests and staff with safety as first priority.
  16. Train summer staff to safely operate all aspects of the required program and GS areas.
  17. Instruct summer staff in proper procedures as needed in each area.
  18. Assist in emergency situations as directed or trained by camp staff.
  19. Oversee the daily operation of the one or more areas of the guest service dept. (pool, jeeps, kidsklub, bb gun range, etc…)
  20. Assist the GS team with lodge trash, bathrooms and daily cleans.
  21. Operate a Trail West owned school bus when scheduled with the safety of guests as #1 priority.
  22. Assist the Guest Service staff with inventory and ordering equipment and supplies.
  23. Run and assist the host with program events such as all camp events, carnival and tableau.
  24. Be able to rise to the unexpected needs of guests and staff that are not related to the task at hand.
  25. Attend all intern devotions and functions as well as be an active participant in intern community.

Qualifications

  1. Must display a mature and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  2. Current licensed EMT-B (minimum). In some cases, being a PA, NP or RN may be acceptable.
  3. Previous Young Life summer staff experience or equivalent.
  4. Acceptance of and compliance with Young life's statements of faith and mission purpose statement, and Young Life's policies and principles.
  5. Must be self-motivated, able to work and lead others with minimal supervision and possess patience, understanding and a willingness to learn and accept direction from property staff and assigned team.
  6. Must possess ability to remain calm in stressful situations and act appropriately to calm others.
  7. Must be assertive enough to control a crowd and handle emergency situations such accidents and injuries.
  8. Must be able to work flexible hours – often work will require you to be on-hand in the morning and in the evening.
  9. Must be willing and able to travel to Colorado during spring break to pass a written test, train and pass a driving test for your CO CDL license.
  10. Be a leader by example in matter of conduct as well as performance of duties
