Independent Investigative Inquiry (III)
Selective 2 – Systematic Literature Review
Proposal Form
Students who choose Selective 2 as their III option can expect to learn and develop the skills involved indesigning ananswerable question, systematically searching medical literature, and critically reviewing and evaluating said literature. Students will also learn about research methods and design. The proposal should be brief; in addition to the Cover Sheet, it should be generally 2-3 typed pages, and should provide enough information to give the committee a good idea of what you plan to do. If information can be presented in non-narrative form, such as a graph, bulleted list, or flow diagram, etc., please do so.
For aIII systematic literature review, an unresolved question is posed; this question is based on the biomedical research literature that is published, which is what makes the question “answerable.”The question is built based on already knowing what the answer to the question is.For III, the question must be relevant to the practice of medicine and health care. It may be on clinical practice, medical ethics, health policy, health education, or an historical look at a medical issue.
It is ideal to design a PICOS question for a III systematic literature review:A Population (or problem) receiving an Intervention (test, treatment or placebo) as Compared to another test/treatment/placebo producing an Outcome (disease or improvement) associated with research Study Designs.
You will need to search medical literature in order to design a question; after your proposal has been approved you will systematically search literature further.
The key items to include in your III selective 2 proposal are:
- background information on the topic
- an answerable question
- a hypothesisabout the question
- the names of the data base(s) you will search
- the key words to include in literature search
- an outline of an evidence table
- demonstration that there are enough published studies that address your question to proceed with your review. Attach a list of a minimum of 10 published studies to your proposal. The III Approval Committee will not consider your proposal without this.
Students will work with a faculty sponsor who is a regular or clinical faculty member in any healthcare-related department at aWWAMI university. The sponsor must be experienced and familiar with the project topic and must also have skills and knowledge that complement those of the student. The sponsor’s role is to help the student plan the study, meet with her/him as necessary during the execution of the project, review and sign-off on the final paper, and provide an evaluation.
PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
Completed proposals should be saved in PDF formatand submitted between January 1 andMarch 31, 2018to the UWSOM Curriculum Office, at subject line should read: III SELECTIVE 2 PROPOSAL.Proposals must be receivedby March 31, 2018: incomplete and/or late applications will not be accepted.Students can expect to receive e-mail notice approximately 2 weeks after their proposal has been received. The Committee will either approve the proposal, ask for additional information/clarification, or ask that the proposal be revised.
FINAL PRODUCT
III Selective 2 students are required to write a paper that summarizes the status of the question, giving particular attention to areas of uncertainty; in most cases, the student must produce one or more Evidence Tables that demonstrate the evidence gathered from the literature. The conclusion should recommend a logical next step for research, such as a hypothesis to test and/or suggested experimental approaches.
The student must be the sole author of the paper, even if he/she has collaborated with a faculty member, or plans to submit a paper for publication under joint authorship.Your faculty advisor must review and evaluate your paper and complete a Faculty Sponsor/Advisor Statement evaluation form. The final paper and evaluation form will be due March 15, 2019.

Faculty Sponsor Comments
Students are asked to work with a faculty member who isa regular or clinical faculty member in any healthcare-related department at aWWAMI university. The faculty sponsor must be experienced and familiar with the project topic and methods used in the study. She/he must also have skills and knowledge that complement those brought by the student.
