Spring Newsletter May 2005

Dear Member

As last years newsletter was sent out early to continue the promotion of the Centenary Dinner we can now report that the event was a roaring success. Ninety two members and partners enjoyed an excellent meal, speeches toasting the School and the Club were respectfully made by John James and Major General Louis Lillywhite with replies from the headteacher Duncan Meikle and our President Peter Robinson, followed by a full throated rendition of the School Song, a series of fines imposed by Ian Fauset on members for misdemeanours over the past 50 years, and a social evening lasting into the early hours.

Quiz Tuesday 8 February

Held at the Kings I-lead there were some sixty people attending mainly from the sixth form. An excellent evening with Mike Bowen as always the firm question master, and Sue Dyson providing the music questions, and marking along with John Brooks.

Matches v The School 21 March

The Rugby Cup was again won by the Old Edwardians in another very close match winning by 21 points to 17. The Lionel Brockwell man of the match salver was awarded to Sam Everton.

The Ladies were not so successful with the school winning the Netball and Hockey. The players of the netball match were Rebecca Gentle and Nicole Waterman, and the player of the hockey match was Jenna Harold. Our thanks go to Dave Bassett and Laura Summerton for organising our teams

Old Edwardians Weekend Friday 1st July to Sunday 3rd July

The Cricket match against the School will again be held on the Friday evening at Lichfield CC’s new ground off Eastern Avenue, and will be a 25 over match starting as soon as possible after 5.30pm after the Match the presentation of the trophy followed by refreshments will take place in the Clubs pavilion. Anyone interested in playing for the Old Edwardians team should contact our team organiser Chris Cooper, John Ellithorne or myself.

We regret the Tennis will not be played this year as splitting venues has caused problems while numbers of school and old eds available to play continues to fall.

Annual Reunion Service Sunday 3rd July

The Service will as always be held in St Johns Hospital Chapel at 11.30 am and will be conducted by the new Master Canon Roger Williams. This service is the longest continuous part of the weekend having taken place for almost all of the Club’s 100-year existence so please come and support this tradition.

Treasure Hunt Wednesday 6 July

A car treasure hunt organised by Arnold Matthews will start from the Friary long stay

car park (the old lorry park) at 7pm. You can be sure of an entertaining evening

finishing at a local hostelry for the answers and prize giving. All welcome at a cost of

To be held on the day the A & A/S results are published. 2005 will be the sixth year we have organised the event and it increases in popularity with students from school. Due to a change in management at our usual venue the Kings Head it will now be held in the rear garden at the Duke of York, Greenhill, Lichfield

Presidents Dinner Saturday 1st October

Due to various reasons this annual event has been moved from Old Edwardians weekend. The Schools senior five are invited and it will be held in a restaurant in Lichfield chosen by the President. Members are welcome to join us and if interested please contact John Ellithorne or myself.

Retirements from School

We understand that Bill Jackson is retiring as Head of the VIth Form but will continue teaching on a part time basis. For a number of years he was the School’s representative on our committee and we would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his continued support. Other members of staff retiring include Marion Brannan, John Brinkley and Sue Mulligan..

E-mail

Arnold Matthews our ever-young computer king has asked that where appropriate could members confirm their e-mail address as he suspects some have changed. Arnold can be contacted at

Finally we apologise to R Whorton for reporting his death when in fact it was his brother W.E Whorton who had died. The mix up was due to having a membership list and an open contact e-mail site.

As always we hope to meet up with you in the near future.

Yours sincerely

David La Trobe
