Course Objectives

Prerequisites(Course & Skill Set):ENC 0020 or EAP 1695 or appropriate score on the CPT.

ARH 1000, Face-to-face format

This section of ARH 1000 will be delivered in a face-to-face format on SPC’s Tarpon Springs campus, although portions of it will be uploaded into the MyCourses platform.To succeed in this course, you need to:

·  Get a copy of the Gateways to Art textbook, 2nd edition. You have to have the InQuizitive access code to be able to take the quizzes in this course! See the links for the eBook and for InQuizitive in MyCourses for more information and listen about the various options on the first day of class. Your most economical option is to make your purchase directly via the link within MyCourses.

·  Attend class regularly. Pay attention & keep your cell phones off!

·  Have access to a computer with a high-speedinternet connection, since the image files are large and take a long time to download on dial-up connections. If you do not have this access, there are computers available on all SPC campuses for your use. Please check the schedules at each campus for hours.

·  Have enough computer knowledge to access and navigate the MyCourses website,prepare keyboarded documents, and use email. You need to be able to view streaming videos, open Word documents and PowerPoint presentations, and navigate through the MyCourses system to see the course content and to be able to take quizzes and submit information to dropboxes.

·  Have time throughout the semester for traditional homework assignments such as readings, study questions, a museum visit, an architectural scavenger hunt, and quiz & exam preparation.

·  The student will understand the dynamics of visual form by:

a.  identifying and/or discussing the principles of design in two dimensional and three dimensional elements.

b.  discussing the interaction of illusion and pure plastic form.

c.  discussing the interaction of media, the principles of design, illusion, and pure plastic form.

·  The student will understand the various modes of seeing in the visual arts by:

a.  discussing the naturalistic, expressive, and conceptual modes in the visual arts.

b.  discussing the process of perception.

·  The student will understand the content of visual form by:

a.  discussing the relationship of form to content.

b.  identifying and discussing the content of a specific work.

·  The student will demonstrate an ability in writing by planning and writing one or more papers completed outside of the direct classroom experience.

·  The student will demonstrate an understanding of the relationships and contrasts among different cultural ideas and arts by visiting and writing a critical report on a cultural activity that includes the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art.

Criteria Performance Standard:

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.

Below are the ISBNs and prices for the variousGateways to Artpackages by Debra J. DeWitte, Ralph M. Larmann, and M. Kathryn Shields. We are using the 2nd edition of this book.

·  A notebook if you take hard copy notes, or a Word file if you take notes on your computer. If you want to do well in this class, you should take notes on your reading and treat this as a serious college-level class. Just skimming the text and then taking the quizzes will likely yield a low grade.

Quizzes & Exam

Each of yourquizzes and one final exam will consist of objective questions, based on the material found in the chapters that is covered in the Gatewaystextbook. The questions are formatted as multiple-choice and may include images or just text. The quizzes and the final exam will be taken online via the MyCourses platform and require a good high-speed internet connection. If you do not have a reliable one, then take the quizzes in one of the computer labs on campus. The quizzes will be taken via the InQuizitive platform provided by the Norton publisher, so you will have to have a valid access code in order to be able to take them. As they comprise 55% of your overall grade, it is important that you have this access code. Within MyCourses in the “InQuizitive” folder, you may click on the link and either activate a code you already have (bundled with a textbook purchase) or you may purchase an eBook for $50 that includes the access code. You may also get a trial version of InQuizitive, but it says that this may expire after 3 weeks. The stand-alone access code is only $20, according to the Norton textbook representative.

On the final exam, which is taken directly within MyCourses, pay special attention to learning thetitle,artist(where applicable),medium,period, and identifying theartistic significanceof works of art, as some of the test questions will be based on these criteria. You will not need to learn the dates for the works, although being aware of what century they belong will be helpful to your general understanding of the material. The emphasis will be on images that are shown inthe PowerPoint slide shows in MyCourses,as well as in the textbook. You may consult your textbook as you take quizzes and the exam.

The final exam in this class is cumulative and you have 75 minutes to complete 52 questions. Two of the questions are identified as extra credit questions: if you get these questions wrong, they will not be counted against you. Again, you may use your Gateways textbook to confirm your answers as you take this exam online.

There are 12 quizzes in this class and they will make up 55 % of your final grade. In your grade book, they are averaged together in one line that says InQuizitive in the grade report. The grades will change as you take more of the quizzes. You can see your individual quiz grades when you’re logged in to InQuizitive, but not within the MyCourses grade report. The quizzes are already open, so you may work ahead. Each quiz has a minimum number of questions you have to answer, but if you are not satisfied with your grade at that point, you may keep working on it, ostensibly until you earn 100%. That way, you truly have the best chance to earn the grade you want to have in this class via the quizzes just by working longer, if necessary.

You only have ONE attempt to take the final exam in this class! No test grades will be dropped in this course!

Whenever communicating with me via email, I would appreciate it if you avail yourself of your computer’s spell checker and send me grammatically correct messages, since I’m not impressed by the recent trend toward ignoring all laws of English grammar and capitalization in email messages.

Museum Field Trip Paper

Our community offers a number of excellent opportunities for experiencing the visual arts in local museums.In this course, the college requests you to visit theLeepa-Rattner Museum of Arton the Tarpon Springs campus of SPC and complete a discussion posting assignmentrelated to your visit.Admission is free for SPC students.

If you do not live within Pinellas County, Florida, you need to indicate that in your 1stdrop box assignment to me and suggest an alternate art museum that is local to you where you might be able to visit during the term to fulfill your museum writing discussion post. Please provide the url for the museum also. I will then reply to you and let you know if your alternate suggestion is an acceptable venue.

You must submit the museum paper in Word format in the proper drop box, with your photos of your favorite and least favorite works of art clearly inserted into the document and identified, and described in the paragraphs accompanying the works. You also need to include a photo of yourself inside the museum to prove you were there this semester. Please check the detailed formatting instructions for the paper in MyCourses.

TheLeepa-Rattner Field Tripwhere I am giving the tour is onSaturday, 8/27/2015 at 11 a.m.You are encouraged to join us then. That way you will get a chance to ask questions about how to do the writing assignments in this course.

Joining me for the official field trip is strongly encouraged. If you do, you will net a small reward for it grade-wise. However, you definitely need to go to a museum during the semester in which you are taking this class and do the Museum Visit Paper, whether you can go on the field trip with your instructor or whether you have to do the museum visit on your own. If you do go on the 2 hour guided tour with the instructor, you will earn + 5 points extra credit on the Museum Visit Essay grade -- that way those of you who make the effort to come with me at a given time will be rewarded for it.

This semester, I am offering an additional Field trip to the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. We will meet around 10:45 a.m. in the lobby building of the Ringling estate, so we can tour the art museum from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. I will be docenting this tour as well, and you may also bring one guest as an honorary member of our class along, if you desire. Your only cost is gas to get down there and tolls to cross the Sunshine Skyway.

This instructor will strive to grade the Museum Visit Essays in a timely manner. Please realize that doing a good job reviewing this assignment takes some effort, so please be patient, as the grades are submitted manually as the instructor gets to them.

Architectural Scavenger Hunt Discussion

Ideally, this is 3-hour activity is a two-person project, so you may use the "Your Discussion Forum" to see if you can meet up with a classmate and determine where locally you may want to get together to look for various architectural details.It has to be done during this term, so digging up old vacation photos will not do!
If you cannot meet up with a classmate, maybe one of your friends or family members will tag along with you and help you find as many examples of the architectural details as possible in the attached Word document form in the instructions for the discussion. In addition, you need to have digital photos of you in front of each architectural feature that you are including to prove you were there in person. If you are alone, just take a selfie. You need to post your filled-out .pdf file with your findings inserted with explanations about them in the captions. I will upload a sample to get you started. This may be one of the most fun activities in the course.

All communication will take place within the MyCourses email. This email has been set so that the messages cannot be forwarded to your private email address by the college administration, so please check in to your course daily to see if there is a new message.
