This educational institute and resource center includes programs for children with speech and language problems. Depending on the severity of the hearing loss and parental preference, total communication, oral and cued speech methods are used. Workshops to teach sign language communication are offered for children and adults.

This is an educational center offering services to families of preschool deaf and deaf-blind children. Besides on-site audiological, educational, and parent support programs, the Clinic offers three world wide correspondence courses to parents of: deaf babies (birth through 18 months), deaf preschoolers (18 months through five years), and young deaf-blind children. All courses are available in English and Spanish. All services are offered at no charge to parents. John Tracy also offers a free summer program.

NOTE: This organization is included here because it may be convenient for some people from southwestern Connecticut to travel to New York City.
The LEAGUE serves consumers of all ages from any state. The services offered include: audiological and otological evaluations; hearing aid dispensing and devices for daily living; communication therapy including language development, auditory perceptions training, speech reading, articulation and voice therapy; reading remediation, psychological and psychiatric evaluation and psychotherapy; educational, vocational and personal counseling; job placement; social work services, social group programs, captioned films on Saturday afternoon; information and referral. All communication modalities are used. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evenings and Saturdays by appointment.

PHP is a resource center for families with children who have special needs. One division is concerned with siblings of disabled children. Basically a regional organization, it also responds to information and speaker requests from all over the country and offers a variety of literature for sale. It publishes Special Addition.

The Theatre Access Project (TAP) has as its goal to provide access to performing arts for people with disabilities--people who are hard of hearing, deaf, partially sighted, blind, people who for medical reasons cannot climb stairs, and people who require aisle seating or use wheelchairs. Through TAP, Theatre Development Fund offers discount tickets to selected events in theatre, dance and music. Once each month, a sign language interpreted performance is sponsored for the theater goers who are deaf.

III PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

Organizations of the helping professions listed here should be able to refer clients to members experienced in working with people who have a hearing impairment and understanding their specific needs. These organizations have been encouraged to collect such information from their members and to share it with INFOLINE. Sometimes the COMMISSION ON THE DEAF AND HEARING IMPAIRED learns about individuals who know sign language and are employed in private businesses and eager to serve the deaf community.
