Dear Third Grade Parents and Guardians,
This year in music class your child will study the recorder. We will begin our recorder unit the week of October 12.
Purchasing a recorder:
· Each student will need a soprano recorder of their own and should bring the recorder every day that they have music class. Please purchase a recorder as soon as possible.
· Soprano recorders (approximately12 inches long) can be purchased at music stores (Hingham Music, Matt’s music in Weymouth) or online from Amazon.com or West Music.com
· If it is a financial hardship to purchase a Soprano recorder (approx. cost is $10), the school will provide an instrument that the student can borrow for the entire school year.
· Some brands I recommend are: Yamaha, LMI, Lyons, Hohner, Aulos, and Angel.
Recorder Homework:
Third grade is the first grade that students are required to do homework for music class. Their homework assignment for the entire school year is to practice their recorder 5 minutes every day.
The music teachers understand that students are busy and will occasionally not have time to practice. That being said, students who don’t practice regularly will fall behind, and that will be reflected in the grade they receive on their report card.
The expectations for first term in third grade music are:
· Students will sing in tune with others.
· Students will identify and perform simple rhythms.
· Students will be able to name the 9 notes of the treble clef staff.
· Students will hold the recorder with their left hand on top.
· Students will play three note songs on the recorder without squeaking.
Students that meet all of these expectations will receive a grade of B on their report card. If they exceed these expectations, they will receive a higher grade, and if they do not meet these expectations their grade will be lower than B on their report card.
