YEAR 7
ENGLISH
During the course of the summer term your child will be encouraged to develop his/her skills in English in the areas of spoken language, reading and writing, handwriting and spelling.
We will study “The Twits” by Roald Dahl. The children will make posters; write stories, letters and poems based on the book.
As a conclusion to the book students exaggerate their characters in writing in order to become ‘Twit’ children.
Your son/daughter will be encouraged to read regularly in school but we would be grateful if you could take time to share a book with your child for 10-15minutes a day.
We hope you will encourage your child to complete any homework set to the best of his/her ability.

NUMERACY
In Numeracy this term your child will be following the National Curriculum. He/she will be developing in the areas of:
· Number and place value
· Addition and subtraction
· Multiplication and division
· Fractions (inc decimals and percentages)
· Measurement including time
· Geometry - Properties of Shapes
· Geometry - Position and Direction
· Statistics/handling data
· Money and real life problems
· Making decisions and checking results
Every lesson will have an oral and mental maths component in which pupils will develop their skills in using numbers.
All students will have the opportunity to solve problems and apply their maths skills.
Students should take every opportunity to play counting games, learn the number bonds and learn the times tables. Any help you can give at home will greatly aid their learning.
Each student has the use of a laptop computer which are to be used by all the Numeracy classes at least once a week. All students can log onto the ‘My Maths’ website to access the maths work at home. We will use Mathsbase 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, Numeracy workout 1,2,3, and 4 and Numbershark. The students will also use Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software

SCIENCE
In the first half-term pupils investigate “SOLUTIONS” and find out what happens when things are mixed or dissolved together. They investigate sieving, filtering and evaporation as well as using chromatography to identify mystery pen-writers.
In the concluding “SPACED OUT” unit the pupils investigate the solar system and film their own explanations of natural phenomenon.

ART and DESIGN
‘Under the Sea’
Students will explore the shapes and patterns found on fish and coral. They will explore a range of materials and techniques including collage and wire.

CITIZENSHIP
During this term students will learn about the Rainforest, they will start to identify the location and climate of tropical Rainforests as well as the species, people and habitats. Students will start to investigate the effects of deforestation and will research what they could do to support the Tropical Rainforests of the world.

DESIGN and TECHNOLOGY
During the next term at St Clare’s students will be studying an area of Design and Technology involving Graphic Media. Students in the group will be introduced to various graphic materials (types of pencils, paper, pens, highlighters etc.) and practice the correct use of these items in a number of different ways:-
By producing their own graphic output
The use of worksheets
Text books
Models
Work will be recorded in the form of a Project Booklet. Some homework may be given and we would hope you will encourage your child to complete this work.
It would be appreciated if your child could bring a contribution of £1 when finished items are brought home. A slightly larger contribution may be requested for more costly items, i.e. items containing clock movements etc.

HUMANITIES
Year 7 pupils will study Geography in the first half term and History in the second half. In Geography, they will learn about volcanoes and earthquakes in Japan. In History, they will learn about medieval Britain and the Norman Conquest.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
Students will use 2 Do It Yourself to design games and quizzes. They will focus on control technology during the summer term. They will complete simple programming tasks using Turtle and Beebots. They will then apply their knowledge of control in our programming software Scratch where they will make simple games.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Students will consolidate their learning so far and be introduced to various aspects of French Culture. We will use international themes the to investigate life in various French speaking countries across the world.

PERSONAL HEALTH AND SOCIAL EDUCATION
In addition to the continuing personal development work, Year 7 students will be following a programme of drugs education. The work will focus on the personal and social issues surrounding the use of alcohol and tobacco and will look at alternative lifestyle choices. There will also be some work on personal safety, with a visit from the community police.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Year 7 will complete a striking and fielding unit of work involving a mixture of cricket and rounders.
During the final half term students will participate in assorted athletics events including; discus, javelin, standing long jump, sprinting and relays.

The two topics for this term are 1) How did it all begin? We will be looking at various creation stories from different cultures and examine similarities and differences. 2) What is special about our world? Students will have the opportunity to express what inspires them from the natural world.

SWIMMING
Year 7 – All Year
Throughout the year, Year 7 will have weekly swimming lessons at the Lonsdale swimming pool in Mickleover. There will be no charge for this activity but students will be required to provide their own costume or shorts, and a towel. All swimming costumes and shorts must be appropriate for a school swimming lesson. The school will provide swimming goggles for all students. Students will work to develop all four strokes and improve water confidence.
