CITP Coalition Meeting

Meeting Minutes:

1.  Attending: Cesar, Bobbie Jo, Megan, Krystal, Jerilyn, Amanda, Kerry, Lori, Chris, Cheng

2.  Dallas, Warren and Madison County updates

  1. Megan – Warren – Ragbai coming up, will attend and partner with Cheryl B. from Orange City
  2. Krystal – Dallas – coalition regrouping
  3. Kerry/Bobbie Jo – Madison – Family Fun Day served more than 200, all left with tobacco info in their “goodie” bag

3.  Governor’s Award - Lori will FINALLY receive this award July 23, 2-4p at SE Polk. Please plan to attend! A press release will be going out to Polk County media (priority Ankeny Register) to promote her. Thanks for all you do, Lori!

4.  Recap of Smokefree Air Act celebration

  1. 14 Central Iowa businesses took part in promotion
  2. Ads in JUICE and on STAR, KIOA and LITE… paid in part by ALA
  3. Folder shared with members included the information we shared with each of the businesses before the celebration
  4. Businesses also received blue “non-smoking section” tshirts and mugs
  5. 10a press conference at Capitol July 1 hosted by ITPA (statewide coalition). In attendance: coalition members, advocates, legislators, AG, business owners. Great turnout!
  6. July 1 radio remote at Flarah’s – Cesar attended – thanks!
  7. Numerous letters to the editor from current and former coalition members in newspapers
  8. Letters sent by staff to Boards of Health, Public Health and Chambers in each county referring them to us for questions
  9. Numerous radio interviews conducted – KDLS, WHO Radio, NPR, EFR radio station with Amanda Haag

5.  Highlights of our upcoming action plan

  1. Continue to work with JEL students
  2. Working to change policy at private schools – all public schools have tobacco-free campuses, so if you have contacts at any private schools, that would be helpful!
  3. Educate parents about tobacco use and talking to their kids
  4. Tobacco-free worksites, college campuses
  5. Promote the Smokefree Air Act
  6. Smoke-free vehicle and home pledges
  7. Education to animal related establishments about SHS exposure
  8. Promoting Quitline Iowa
  9. Working with our coalitions and other community groups
  10. Partnering with Priority Population Grants in Polk
  11. Cheng/EFR – Asian Pacific Islander
  12. Stephanie/EFR – LGBT
  13. Cesar/Proteus – Latino/Hispanic
  14. Amber/Urban Dreams – African American

6.  Lori reviewed feedback from June meeting survey.

7.  Discussion about display panels – where can we display these?

8.  NEW CITP website should be up and running in the next week www.tobaccofreepartnership.com
Will have a specific page for our coalition, minutes, agendas, events, etc.

Next steps, Identify focus, Businesses to formally ask to parnter

The mission of the Central Iowa Tobacco-free Partnership Coalition is to reduce death and disease caused by tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke in Central Iowa.
