Job Summary: Performs professional librarian services by assisting customers in locating and using library resources and providing timely and accurate information and answers to research questions; develops and presents programs; selects/orders materials as directed; performs other duties as assigned. May be assigned to the Central Library or to a Branch.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provides reference and reader’s advisory assistance to customers and library staff in person at a public service desk, by phone and via e-mail, including explaining the arrangement of the library, identifying the types of materials available, guiding users to sources of information, providing instruction in the use of various reference sources and contacting external experts;
  2. Assists with collection development, maintenance, and management;
  3. Promotes the Library within the community by supporting community outreach programs, including providing library tours, presenting programs, developing displays and participating in community organizations;
  4. Provides broad-based reference services to customers and library staff, though may specialize in a particular area such as children’s materials, periodicals, reference, media, business and technology or other specialty and may serve as in-house expert;
  5. May recruit, train, and supervise library employees and volunteers;
  6. Participates in Library projects, committees and activities as assigned;
  7. Performs other duties as instructed and assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Acts as a representative of the Library to the public;
  2. Gains thorough knowledge of Library policies, procedures and operating standards;
  3. Knowledge of reference practices and procedures and the ability to interpret them to staff and the public;
  4. Broad knowledge of specialty subject area and other reference areas and departments;
  5. Keeps relevant parties informed of all major issues and programs and to recommend changes as appropriate;
  6. Communicates effectively and appropriately with people from diverse backgrounds;
  7. Works with diverse staff in order to accomplish library and department goals and objectives;
  8. Maintains a pleasant and productive working atmosphere;
  9. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other professionals and the general public;
  10. Knowledge of electronic resources, including the Internet and database information retrieval; and
  11. Operates relevant computer systems, hardware, software, and office machines.

Education and Experience:

  1. Master’s degree in Library Science;
  2. No previous experience required.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work requires light physical effort in the handling of light materials or boxes and tools or equipment in non-strenuous work positions up to 30 pounds and/or continual standing or walking 60%+ of the time.

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals.
