National Honor Society Application Instructions

Applications are due March 22nd to the Main CHS Office

Students are invited to apply for Canby High School’s National Honor Society chapter if they are a sophomore or a junior and meet the following criteria after the completion of the second term in that school year:

Sophomore / Junior
3.7 cumulative GPA
4 credits (8 classes) of the following courses
Advanced Freshman English
Advanced Geometry
British Literature
Any class designated “Honors” / 3.5 cumulative GPA
3 credits (6 classes) designated “Honors”

Application Requirements:

  1. Your unofficial transcript with completed worksheet outlining qualifying courses
  2. 2 staff references
  3. Completed service and leadership worksheets—please type all activities into the worksheet
  4. Personal statement (approximately 200 words) addressing one of the following prompts:

How do the pillars of the NHS (scholarship, character, service and leadership) fit into your future goals?

OR What sets you apart from the other applicants?

The faculty review committee will consider your application’s merits by these criteria:

  1. Scholarship—The committee considers your cumulative GPA and courses completed
  2. Character—The committee considers each applicant’s integrity and demonstrated ability to follow the guidelines of the National Honor Society.
  3. Service and Leadership—The committee examines your service/leadership to both your school and community. It looks for voluntary service/leadership as opposed to that may be required by a coach, parent or adviser.
  4. Personal Statement—the committee will evaluate your statement for content and writing conventions.

After carefully considering the above criteria, the Faculty Review Committee will act upon your application in one of two ways:

  1. Acceptance. You have satisfactorily met the necessary criteria. You will be invited to Inductions, which will take place at the Academic Awards Ceremony in April.
  2. Non-Acceptance. You did not satisfactorily meet the criteria for the National Honor Society. If you are a sophomore, you are encouraged to reapply the following year.

Part 1: Leadership
