Wacky Weekdays –Summer Fun
BACKGROUND
The youth will be creative in designing their picture. They will also learn how to make a refreshing snack out of a couple of ingredients.
WHAT TO DO
Make Your Own Pinwheel
- Cut an 8” by 8” square out of a piece of paper
- Draw diagonal lines across your square to join up the corners
- Mark the center of the square with a dot
- Draw an additional dot at each of the corners
- Using a pair of scissors, cut along the diagonal lines without cutting all the way to the center dot, stay on the lines.
- Using a pin, punch holes through each of your 5 dots
- Line the dots on the outer edge of your pinwheel up with the dot in the center and push your pin through the dots and then into the eraser of a wooden pencil
Make Lemonade
- Give each youth a lemon and a cup
- Have the youth roll their lemon on a table back and forth (this will help with squeezing the juice out)
- Give the lemon to an adult and have them cut it in half
- Have the youth take one half of their lemon and squeeze it over the cup to collect the juice
- Add a couple of sugar cubes to the cup
- Fill the cup up with water
- Stir the mixture
- Drink and enjoy the lemonade
- When the cup is empty, repeat steps 4-7 with the other half of the lemon
Fingerpainting
1.Give each youth a piece of paper
2.Set different colors of paint on the table
3.Let the youth use their fingers to draw a picture or tell them what they need to paint

TALK IT OVER
1.Is this something you would make at home?
2.What other types of pictures could you paint with your fingers?
3.Is there a certain way that you have to blow the pinwheel to make it move?
Helpful Hints
1.The sugar cubes can be substituted with sugar
2.Having the youth put a box in the center of the pinwheel paper will remind them to not cut all the way to the center
