SIG Proposal
Focus: The general focus for our SIG is using Web 2.0 technologies for writing across the curriculum.
· Teacher: Should be trained and moderately experienced in using basic Internet functions, intermediate English skills, and knowledge of Internet resources. The teacher will present a lesson utilizing information technology. Initially, direct instruction will be used and scaffolding will take over. This will include, deductive as well as inductive reasoning and teaching styles.
· The Learner: Students will need basic computer skills as well as experience using the Internet. This will support the focus of creating lessons that achieve valuable goals which work with technology rather than focusing on learning how to simply implement it. These lessons should be presented in an organized fashion that is logical, clear, and timely.
· Subject Matter: The structure of these lessons will be principally idea-based with metaphoric supplements. We want to stress the “big-picture” ideas so that they relate to the student in a practical and useful manner that is not just going to be useful for the lesson. The Internet is still in its infancy (especially as an educational tool) and historical advancements can prove for better and more effective use as students reach higher levels of thinking.
· Context/Setting: Students have prior knowledge and experience with computer use as well as the Internet; however, both desperately need to be amended that they aren’t just for entertainment value. The students’ understanding of technology needs to be broadened or expanded to include productivity. This is a lofty, yet highly valuable goal.
