ASSIGNMENT: For this project, you will be designing your own “glass castle” or dream home. In each part of the project, you will provide detailed information about your ideal place to live. Money and resources are not limitations, so use your imagination and be descriptive so that we can see the home from your point-of-view.

Part 1: Title Page

You decide on the format, but must include:

  1. Your name
  2. Teacher’s name
  3. Assignment Due Date
  4. Title: Name your dream home (i.e. Jeannette’s father names his dream home The Glass Castle)
  5. Explanation of your home’s title (2-3 complete sentences)

The title page is your project’s first impression, so be sure the page is neat and creative.

Part 2: Exterior Description

In 1-2 pages, double-spaced, describe the outside of your dream home. Provide specific details. Possible details to include: color, landscaping, porch, shutters, style, etc. These items are NOT to be listed, but worked into well-edited paragraphs.

For two exterior features, you are to incorporate an analogy into your description. An analogy finds similarities between two things. You will be making a connection between your dream house and your personality. For example: My home has a brick chimney because sometimes I get frustrated and need to let off steam.

Part 3: Interior Description

In 1-2 pages, double-spaced, describe the inside of your dream home. Provide specific details. Possible details to include: number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, other rooms, unique features, special furniture, style, paint colors, art, number of floors, your favorite room, lighting, mood, etc.) Again, DO NOT make a list, but describe important features in paragraph form.

For two interior features, you are to incorporate an analogy into your description. An analogy finds similarities between two things. You will be making a connection between your dream house and your personality. For example: My living room has a plush sofa along one wall because I like to make people feel comfortable.

Part 4: Location

In 1-2 pages, double-spaced, describe the location of your ideal home. Give specific city and/or region information. This may require brief research if you cannot provide a detailed description of the location for your ideal home. Remember, the sky’s the limit! Be sure this section explains this choice of location.

Part 5: Symbolic Interpretation

Provide brief responses to the following questions:

  1. What does “The Glass Castle” symbolize to the Walls family?
  2. What does your dream home symbolize in your life?

Part 6: Exterior Visual

Draw, paint, or collage the outside of your dream home. You may NOT print a picture from the Internet. This section will be graded on detail and connection to your written description of the exterior (Part 2). Artistic ability is not required, but neatness and detail count.

Part 7: Interior Image

For this section, select ONE of the following options.

Option A: Draw, paint, or collage an image of one room in your dream home.

OR

Option B: Draw a blueprint for one floor of your dream home. You must provide detailed labels for each room and the important features of those rooms.

Whichever option you choose, be sure that the image ties to your written description (Part 3). This work must be neat and thoughtful, so you may want to do practice sketches before diving into your final draft.

Before submitting your final draft, make sure:

  • each section begins on a separate page and is clearly labeled. Every page needs a title (i.e. Exterior Description). For Part 1, your title will be the name of your dream home.
  • your font is size-12 and your have 1-inch margins.
  • your grammar and spelling are correct (NO run-on sentences, fragments, commonly misused words, etc.)

No late work will be accepted, so PLAN AHEAD.
