From the Desk of the Pastor….

Changes in Our Conference Setting

The Indiana-Kentucky Conference of the UCC has been doing a study the past year and a half - the Dreams and Visions of the IKC. The results have brought a restructuring to our conference setting.

The IKC Board are extremely pleased to welcome Chad Abbott as our Designated Term-Conference Minister.

The Search Committee presented Chad to the Board on Friday January 6, 2017. The Board unanimously approved him and we are looking forward to Chad's leadership.

He will begin duties with the IKC on May 1, 2017 as Rev Phil Hart leaves his position with the IKC.

Chad currently serves St. Paul's UCC in Alexandria, KY, near Cincinnati, where he lives with his wife, Shannon, daughter Isabel, son Solomon, and dog Zoe. They will move to Indianapolis this summer.

Chad received a BA in Religion and Philosophy in 2000 from Greenville College in Illinois and a Master's of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 2003. He was ordained in the United Church of Christ in 2011 in the IKC. Chad has Committee on Ministry experience in the Ohio Conference and passion for Just Peace Leadership, Pastoral Care and Counseling, Public Speaking and Spiritual Direction.

He is trained in labyrinth walk facilitation and presentation.

Chad is also a published author with his most recent book being

Sacred Habits: The Rise of the Creative Clergy.

Carrie Call and Stephanie Weiner are no longer with our conference; Carrie took a college position and Stephanie retired. With this change, we have local ministers filling in as our Associate Conference Ministers

and they are as follows:

Rev. K. Scott Bowie – Northwest and Northeast Associations

Rev. Dennis Frische-Mouri – Southeast and Western Associations

Rev. Jim Harper – Wabash, Evansville Tri-State, Lincolnland and Kentuckiana Associations.

They will hold these positions until Chad arrives then all will be reviewed as the Board of Directors, along with Chad Abbott, work together for the best of our Conference using the results of the Dreams and Vision Survey. Let’s keep all in prayer as we are in this transitioning time.

Lenten Small Group Study

Join Rev. John Dorhauer and Rev. Traci Blackmon from our UCC national offices and other national cross-denominational leaders in this webinar (video) series on white privilege. They will lead us through four areas of focus: telling the story of your spiritual journey through the lens of race; looking at the dynamic of a culture in which whiteness is the established norm; learning how American attaches a cash value to whiteness; and inviting the participants to commit to becoming an ally in the pursuit of racial equity:

Session 1: The Big Picture – with John Dorhauer

Session 2: Spiritual Autobiography through the Lens of Race – with John Paddock

Session 3: Whiteness as the Norm – with Da Vita D. McCallister

Session 4: Whiteness as Cash Value – with Traci Blackmon

Session 5: On Being an Ally – with Stephen Ray

This webinar series offers a solid foundation on the subject of white privilege while also serving as a preview for the "White Privilege: Let’s Talk" adult education curriculum, part of the United Church of Christ's ongoing commitment to engaging communities of faith in Sacred Conversations on Race.

We’ll start with a short meeting on Ash Wednesday, March 1 at 6pm to receive the outline and curriculum.

We’ll meet each Thursday during Lent in the gathering area at 7pm: March 9, 16, 23, 30, April 6.

Please sign up in gathering area so Pastor Lynne knows how many outlines and curriculum to print.

Lenten Schedule

This series engages with issues of social justice which have always been an important part of the church’s role in bringing about a ‘new Jerusalem’ where all are deemed worthy of love.

But it seems more than ever we are faced with understanding and embodying the call to heal divisions, name and transform oppression and speak out against injustice.

This series will help discern how to bring those messages through preaching and small group study.

March 1 Ash Wednesday 7pm: “Make me an Instrument of Peace”

Amos 5:21-24; Ps 51:1-17

March 5 1st Sunday Lent 8am & 10:30am: “Child of God: Naming Each Other”

Romans 8:31-39

March 12 2nd Sunday Lent 8am & 10:30am: “How Long: Renouncing Evil”

March 19 3rd Sunday Lent 8am & 10:30am: “I Dream of a Church: Christ’s Representation”

Matt 25:31-40

March 26 4th Sunday of Lent 8am & 10:30am: “I Choose Love: Communities of Forgiveness”

Luke 23:32-43

April 2 5th Sunday Lent 8am & 10:30am: “God has Work for Us to Do: Faithful Disciples:

Isaiah 58: 6-12

April 9 6th Sunday Lent 8am & 10:30am: “The Day is Coming: We are One”

Isaiah 35:1-3; Matthew 21:1-21

This year we will be trying something different. Our Maundy Thursday will be a service where we start with fellowship in the St Jacob’s church hall and end in the sanctuary. This will be a unique experience and I hope all will attend. Good Friday I invite you to stop by St Johns in the morning or evening for a time of personal prayer followed by communion in front of the sanctuary. This time you stay in prayer is your choice, 2 minutes to whatever, then conclude by coming forward for your personal family communion.

April 13 Maundy Thursday 7pm St Jacobs “Journey to Baptism”

April 14 Good Friday 9-11am 6-7pm St Johns Pray/Communion

April 16 Easter 8am and 10:30am “Welcome to the New Jerusalem”

I'm Not Your Inspiration

March is Disability Awareness Month

Often, people with disabilities who are successful, athletic, employed or simply good neighbors are put in the spotlight as an inspiration to others. Through portrait-style photography and attention-grabbing copy, this year's Disability Awareness Month theme and poster artwork - "I'm Not Your Inspiration" - emphasizes that people with disabilities are people first. They are co-workers, classmates and neighbors who want to be fully included in their communities - just like everyone else.

Wednesday, March 22 at 7pm, we will have a reading on inclusivity at St. John’s. We hope you can join us!

BROOKLAWN:

Sunday School invites you to help us support Brooklawn, a UCC sponsored Children's Home in Louisville.

Brooklawn currently serves about 175 children on campus. Last summer, one of their speakers shared from the pulpit of the needs of these young people.

Any items on the list are needed and appreciated. This list was recently updated, so all these items are needed on a regular basis.

Sunday School will be collecting through Easter. Please join us in being the Hands and Feet of Jesus here in our own Indiana-Kentucky Conference.

Merom Summer Camps

2017 camp brochures are available in the gathering area at St. John’s. See Pastor Lynne with questions. Sunday School will again pay ½ of the fees. Early registration discount deadline is May 15th.
