Fonmon Challenge 2013
Llantwit Major Archers held the yearly Fonmon Challenge 2013 on 26 May 2013.
The Fonmon Challenge is an Expert Round,
An Expert round is using field face at field distances, but the scoring is different from the usual 5,4,3 and is 5,4,3,2,1, this makes the scoring inherently lower than the usual field round.
The event saw a large contingent of Llantwit Major Archers, Ray Howells Coach of the Welsh Squad even attended, surprisingly the attendance was higher than expected, as two national competitions were also being held the same time in various parts of the country and the fact it was also a Bank holiday weekend. The Committeewould also like to welcome the return of Imogen Kent who had taken a break from outdoor competitions in the WFAA.
It was decided by the committee and the closeproximity of the WFAA Welsh and Open Championships 29-30 June 2013, to reopen the North End of the course,
The North side of the course is not used very much, and as a result was last shot competitively for one day last year when Llantwit Major Archers hosted the Welsh and Open in April 2012. North course is regarded as being a little more difficult than the Southside due to foot placement on the shots, hills, up and down shots,
The shoot was held in ideal shooting conditions on a glorious warm sunny day with clear blue skies and only a gentle breeze.
The scoring was as expected lower than usual due to the round, however it was still fierce between the recurve archers on the Welsh Squad, this made for interesting shooting, due to the terrain this allowed for a few surprising errors and miscalculations on some shots,
Due to the fine weather and the number of archers who attended the round was finished quite early with a number of archers then going on to enjoy the rest of the day in the sunshine.
Medals will be sent out to the winners that submitted the scores and had gone home.
Llantwit Major Archery Club Would like to Thank those few archers who helped get the course back into shape after the damage it sustained during the year it had been closed.
Without the help of those dedicated few, the competition would have not been possible. It was noted by visiting archers and praise was given from them to the club for making it a great course and a wonderful competition.
The Committee would also like to express their thanks to Teresa Goodwin for committing her valuable time before work to make sure the course was ready, And those archers who came to the course early to help set up the admin and practice area and set the targets out.
The committee would also like to express a heartfelt thanks to Catherine Trew and David for their hard and challenging work making sure that all archers were entertained at Cath’s Café, and were supplied with hot and cold beverages, cooking and light hearted humour throughout the day.
The committee would also like to congratulate all juniors who shot extremely well.
