Online Gaming and Copyright Information Statement

Gaming on PCs and Games Consoles on the internet in halls(Network Lite)

LIS has provided new test facilities that will allow online gaming on the internet via Network Lite. This has been done on a test basis because it is possible that it will damage the experience of non-gaming users. However we hope that this will not be the case and that students will enjoy using this new facility. As all games operate differently it will never be possible for us to guarantee that every game will work, however we have made arrangements for games that follow standards that are compatible with the UCLan network to operate. We hope you enjoy this new facility, if during the test period it is not too problematic we intend to make it a standard long term provision.

Please note:shortly we will have a MAC address authentication service which will allow games consoles to connect directly to the internet in halls (Network Lite). Until this time you will need to follow the Internet Connection Sharing guides on theOnline Gaming web page. You will also need to have a cross-over cable and a USB Ethernet adapter (if your PC/laptop doesn’t have two Ethernet/Network sockets). If you have a Mac you will need an Apple USB Ethernet adapter and an ethernet cross-over(X-over) cable. Also, if you have a Nintendo Wii you will need to purchase the Nintendo Wii USB Ethernet adapter as the Nintendo Wii does not have a built-in Ethernet port. With the exception of the Apple USB and the Nintendo Wii USB ethernet adapters you can buy these items at The<i>in the Library.

IMPORTANT - COPYRIGHT INFORMATION

LIS operate a strict policy on Network Lite and the use of torrent or any other peer to peer applications is strictly prohibited as it is open to significant illegal use and damaging to the experience of other users and therefore prohibited.

-The downloading or uploading of any unauthorised copyrighted material including videos, music, audio, photos, software applications, etc..

- Any type of software application used in illegal file sharing, downloading or uploading.

Anyone identified using such software for illegal use will have their internet access REVOKED with immediate effect as follows:

  • First Offence - Two week ban
  • Second Offence - Four week ban
  • Third Offence - Full semester ban (12 weeks)
  • Fourth Offence - Student Disciplinary

PC

We have opened all high outbound ports (1024-65535) for the internet in halls (Network Lite)so most games should work without you having to request anything (inc World of Warcraft etc.).

Please note: that your internet connection is behind NAT so if you try to host games on your own PC you may have issues with other users not being able to connect. You should let your friends outside the UCLan host any games that want to play with them.

You should find that Voice and Video (ie webcam) connections and chat should work but only if you connect/call to other users or services outside the UCLan as they probably won’t be able to connect/call directly to you.

Xbox 360, PS/3 and Nintendo Wii

You will need to connect your console via your Laptop/PC to the internet (Network Lite) using Internet Connection Sharing. Instructions on how to do this for Windows 7, Windows XP and Apple MAC OS X Snow Leopard are available on the following web page:

Playstation Network/Xbox Live and NAT

The vast majority of Playstation Network and Xbox Live multiplayer/online games are hosted on individual’s consoles. Other people’s consoles will connect directly once they have received the connection information to use from the Playstation Network or Xbox Live service.

Games will either allow you to choose to be the host (mostly for private matches) or assign the host randomly amongst participating users (possibly based on their NAT type and speed of connection).

NATtype/settings (Network Address Translation) can affect online gaming. There are three levels of NAT settings and we use NAT Type 3/Strict NAT at UCLan. As a result you are likely to have issues hosting a game on your own console and other users consoles may have issues connecting to yours. So it’s best to let your friends outside UCLan, on NAT Type 1 (Playstation Network) or Open NAT (Xbox Live), host any games that you want to play with them.

You may also have issues connecting to a small minority of games hosted by other users consoles behind a router on NAT Type 2 or 3 (Playstation Network) or Moderate or Strict NAT (Xbox Live).

A small number of games are hosted on the game publishers dedicated servers to which you should be able to connect without issues.

Wii

We have tested the Nintendo Wii connecting to the Wii Network with other global players and this worked. The above information re: NAT may also apply to some or all Wii games.
