COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students learn life literacy skills and individual, family, and community systems in the context of the human services field. Emphasis is placed on human development, professional skills, diversity, analyzing community issues, and life management. Activities engage students in exploring various helping professions, while building essential life skills they can apply in their own lives to achieve optimal wellbeing. English/language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, technology, interpersonal relationships are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include service learning and job shadowing. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. "

STATE OBJECTIVES OF THIS COURSE:

  • COURSE STRUCTURE: A variety of learning styles will be addressed in this class and are reflected in the structure of evaluation for the course. Class time will consist of lecture and class discussion as well as group and individual activities.

GRADING POLICY:Onslow County School 10-point grading system. Major tests will be administered after the units are completed. Quizzes will be given, both announced and unannounced. Projects and Labs will count as a major test grade. This course has very demanding coursework and projects, in which it is important that allstudents be present. Tests and quizzes MUST be made up within 3 days of returning to class after an absence. If you are unable to make up your test within this time frame, you will receive a zero.

NO late work will be accepted unless due to excused absence. Students must maintain a 70 average and have all assignments turned in to participate in labs.

TUTORING POLICY: Students who have a grade below 70% are required by RHS to attend mandatory tutoring to raise their grades. Tutoring is held during Power Hour. If student does not attend mandatory tutoring sessions they will receive lunch detention. Students may check my tutoring schedule for the semester. If there is a conflict they need to speak with me so that we can schedule tutoring sessions for them.

  • Raise your hand ask permission if you need to leave your seat while the teacher istalking.
  • Keep your hands, feet, and individual comments toyourself.
  • There is NO cell phone usage in class. Phones will be stored in the front of the classroom
  • Power outlets are not for charging your personal cellphone.
  • Bottled water is the ONLYbeverage allowed in theclassroom.
  • When in doubt, silence preserves yourdignity.
  • Failure to follow instructions and rules will result in areferral.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY:

Each student is responsible for reading the syllabus and becoming familiar with the policies and schedule. Although every effort will be made to follow this syllabus closely, it is subject to change.

You are responsible for any announcements concerning the course which are made during class. You will need to ask a classmate for any notes written/discussed during your absence. It is the student’s responsibility to check with me before or after class for any missed work. YOU ARE TAKING A PROJECT HEAVY COURSE.

Unexcused absences are not tolerated; there is no makeup work for unexcused absences. Excused absences will be assigned a makeup date to complete all the work in order for the student to catch up to the class. **HOMEWORK is only given when necessary and is expected to be turned in at the beginning of class and completed by ALL students! **

YOU’VE MISSED CLASS!

Now What? Due to unforeseen reasons, doctor, dentist, or orthodontist appointments, you may miss class. However due to the nature of this course and the PROJECTS please consider that when scheduling appointments. First off, if you are going to be gone from class it is highly recommended to email me at and give a brief explanation of what is going on and when I can expect you back. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR LECTURES AND WORK GIVEN AND COMPLETED DURING YOUR ABSENCE.

PROCEDURE: STEP 1: Before class check with a fellow classmate to get announcements & any notes missed during your absence.

STEP 2: Check with me to get any worksheets the class received during your absence & to fill in any information gaps.

I will assign a date for your makeup work to be completed; work not completed on time will receive a zero. If you have questions, please feel free to see me after you have spoken to a classmate and I am always available to speak with you after class. If you know you will be gone for several days in advance, please see me at least 48 hours before your absence so we can discuss work to be completed while you are gone and notes you may need.
