Scenario –
You are a trainee medical practitioner at Hull Royal Infirmary. You must learn about a variety of biological and physical diagnostic procedures and present your findings to your supervisor as a PowerPoint presentation.
Task 1
You must carry out an investigation into physical diagnostic procedures. Record the following measurements:
  1. Your temperature
  2. Your blood pressure
  3. Your lung volume
  4. Your resting pulse rate
Once you have recorded these measurements, write a short description of how you carried out each procedure.
This will take 1 lessons and provides evidence for P1
Task 2
For each of the following features, find out what the normal range for a healthy adult is
  1. Body temperature
  2. Blood pressure
  3. Lung volume
  4. Resting heart rate
Explain what measurements outside the normal range might tell a medical practitioner about the health of a person.
E.g. normal body temperature is 37o C – What might cause the body to be hotter than this?
This will take 2 lesson and will provide evidence for M1
Task 3
Use the internet and textbooks to investigate the following biological diagnostic techniques:
  1. Cytology
  2. Haematology
  3. Chemical testing of urine for diabetes
Describe how each procedure is carried out.
This will take 1 lessons and provides evidence for P1
Task 4
Research and describe how:
  1. Bacteria affect cells when a person is infected
  2. Viruses affect cells when a person is infected
  3. Cytology and haematology can identify an illness in a patient
You may find it helpful to include pictures of healthy and infected cells.
This will take 1 lesson and provides evidence for M1
Task 5
You must describe the advantages and disadvantages of these biological and physical diagnostic procedures:
  1. X-Rays
  2. Ultra sound
  3. Endoscopy
  4. Tissue biopsy
  5. cytology
This will take 2 lessons and will provide evidence for D1
