September 2008
Greetings Child Care representatives!
We appreciate all that you do for young children in KY. As you may know, in 2006 Kentucky launched the Kentucky Early Childhood Data System (KEDS), a data platform that collects child level assessment data for early intervention and public pre-K programs across KY. In 2007, the Division for Child Care launched a pilot program to include some 3 and 4 STAR-rated child care providers in the system.
Through that initiative, as well as programs that regularly collaborate with public pre-k programs in their area, we have received numerous requests to include child care providers in the KEDS system. While we cannot initiate the program state-wide at this time, we have been able to secure a small grant from the Commonwealth Collaborative Initiative at the University of KY. This grant will allow us to offer a new competitive mini-grant program to child care facilities interested in participating in the KEDS system. To that end, we are now accepting mini-grant applications for this 2008-2009 school year for 3 and 4 STAR-Rated child care facilities.
To be eligible, facilities must be within the state of Kentucky, be STAR-Rated at levels 3 or 4, and be willing to assess their children this year with one of the approved classroom/instructional assessments as listed in the KY Early Childhood Continuous Assessment Guide (pages 9 and 10 in the Classroom/Instructional Section):
· Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System for Infants and Children (AEPS)
· Brigance Inventory of Early Development II
· The Carolina Curriculum for Infants & Toddlers with Special Needs
· The Carolina Curriculum for Preschoolers with Special Needs
· The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum for Infants, Toddlers, and Twos
· The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum Assessment for Ages 3-5
· Early Learning Accomplishment Profile (E-LAP)
· Learning Accomplishment Profile 3 (LAP-3)
· Hawaii Early Learning Profile (HELP)
· High Scope Child Observation Record for Infants and Toddlers (COR)
· High Scope Preschool Child Observation Record, Second Edition (COR)
· The Ounce Scale
· The Work Sampling for Head Start
· The Work Sampling System (WSS)
Facilities will be provided with a one-time grant of $500 to establish an online account with the approved publisher for your selected assessment instrument. Funds may also be used for instrument training and/or purchasing protocols. KEDS will provide technical assistance in using the chosen online assessment system and tracking assessment using the KEDS data system. You can find more information about KEDS at https://www.kedsonline.org. If you have questions about the application or the KEDS project, you are welcome to contact Caroline Gooden, Project Director, at 859-257-2081 or .
