TOPIC: DAY AWAY PROGRAM

POLICY TITLE: FOOT AND NAIL CARE

POLICY STATEMENT:

Foot and Nail Care is an additional service provided at the Day Away Program dependent upon the needs of the client and the resources available at the site. The provision of foot care and nail care is at the discretion and availability of Registered Nursing staff.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Upon admission to the program the Family Support Counsellor/Family and Client Care Co-ordinator will determine if foot care / nail care has been identified as a need by the client, family member or referral source.
  1. If foot care / nail care is deemed safe and uncomplicated this service may be provided at the Day Away Program depending on the availability of staff. If it is unsafe to the client, the schedule of the program does not permit, or qualified staff is not available then the client will be referred to a community provider or a foot care clinic.
  1. If the person requesting foot care / nail care is a current client of the Day Away, the Family Support Counsellor/Family and Client Care Co-ordinator will still assess eligibility as above.
  1. The Registered staff will assess each individual client to determine the level of training required to complete the foot care / nail care. Only Registered staff will cut nails and/or foot and nail care will be assigned to staff as UnregulatedCare Providers in Policy PM-3-100. Clients with special needs including those with diabetes, open sores and individuals on blood thinners etc. will be referred to the appropriate resources within the community. Staff and volunteers may perform manicures that only include the filing and application of nail polish.
  1. Equipment used in the provision of foot care / nail care will be disposable or disinfected after every use with the appropriate strength disinfectant.
