Critical Literacy - The Broons*
Lesson 1
L.L To recognise bias in a text
• In talking partners, the children will look at text - a selection of the 'The Broons' cartoon strip. In their pairs, the children will consider the following questions:
Questions:
1. What is the purpose of the text?
2. How does the text present culture (i.e. Scottish families)? Is this bias?
3. Why does the author present in this way? Do you believe this representation?
4. How does the text present gender? Why? Is this bias?
5. How does the text present age? Why?
• Individually, the children will create a mindmap, looking at characters, setting and main points of interest.
Lesson 2
L.I. To recognise where the bias is implicit or explicit in the text
• The children will do a line up to arrange them into groups of 3 or 4.
• The children will put their voice on their table in their new groupings - "My favourite magazine is ... because..."
• The children will then do a graffiti board based on one character from The Broons. The board will circulate the tables until each group has looked at each of the characters - Gran'paw, Maggie, the twins, Ma and Horace.
• The children will follow this by making a list of all the observations on their original graffiti board.
Questions:
1. Which of your findings can be found in the text itself?
2. Which of your findings are not said in the text, but implied?
• The children will consult their list and decide if the observations on their list can be found in the text itself (explicit) or is implied (implicit) and mark the list accordingly.
• A Role On The Wall will be created from these findings for each character, with explicit observations inside the character and implicit observations surrounding the character.
Lesson 3
L.I. To understand the views and values of the characters.
* In groups of 4, the children will hotseat different characters based on a given text.
• Children will thought track a character throughout a given text.
Lesson 4
L.L To identify what view of the world the text is presenting
Questions:
1. What view of Scotland does the text portray?
2. What is real in the text?
3. How could this text be different if it was told in another culture / place?
• Children will rewrite a given text using English instead of Scots and share with their peers
Lesson 5
L.I. To understand and demonstrate the purpose of this type of text
• In pairs, children will complete their own comic strip of 'The Broons', in original style, to make up a class annual.
• The children will share their work with other pairs and feedback.
• In class discussion the original CL questions will be discussed again, ion relation to the newly created texts.
