ALESSANDRO BULGINI

Porta Fortuna (2017)

18th october – 15th november 2017

Piazza Bottesini, Torino

Alessandro Bulgini closes his project OPERA VIVA IN BARRIERA DI MILANO with Porta Fortuna, curated by Christian Caliandro, that accompanied us from may to the beginning of FLASHBACK: the ancient and modern art fair that takes place at Pala Alpitour, 2 / 5 november.

A new train station, maybe fictitious and illusory, maybe not, awaits travellers, visitors and residents: it joins Porta Nuova e Porta Susa - privileged entrances to the shining city centre – but in Barriera, in a fascinating world, mysterious and surprising. So long as we are completely open and ready to be receptive.

For the last appointment of the second edition of Opera Viva Barriera di Milano, that leads us directly to the Flashback fair, Alessandro Bulgini with a humble and small gesture transforms the billboard of 3 per 6 metres in piazza Bottesini in a meeting place, an imaginary place dedicated to imagination, a place for sharing. A place where, in all likelihood, the rules of the “outside” don’t apply, and where reigns a different value system compared to the one now in common use.

A sort of heterotopic reaction, which designs and prospects a different life form.

There’s certainly a bit of irony in this gesture, in this billboard converted in a gigantic sign that points out something that didn’t exist before: however it isn’t a cynical and uninterested emotion, that is distancing itself from reality, but a healthy and enchanted one, trying to redefine the meaning and the usage. This is how the billboard, that for 5 months has been a window on the “elsewhere”, on a dimension of poetry and reflection inspired by the Operette morali (Small Moral Works) by Giacomo Leopardi (a book that cannot be defined, heretic and heterodox foundation of Italian literature and thinking), is converted in something that in some bizarre way comes out of itself, out of its form, it leans towards something else that materialises in our minds. The scaffolding is the entrance, the train station is the garden: the building doesn’t exist because we are the building, a community constantly moving, made up of those who everyday live and navigate the neighbourhood, who want to build and rebuild an identity that isn’t a given because it articulates itself around the concept and the practice of relationships.

And, for this to happen, we certainly need a lot of luck.
