Lesson Plan on The Odyssey

Gods/Goddesses Presentation

Overview of Lesson:

This is one day of a unit in which students will study about Gods and Goddesses and relate them to portions of The Odyssey. Students will present their findings on research projects about Greek mythology and themes. While viewing presentations, students will be required to score one another with a rubric (which they received prior to putting together their projects) of four factors using a five-point scale.

Unit Objectives: (lesson objectives are in bold)

Students will:

·  Read, discuss, and interpret works of fiction and non-fiction.

·  Define unfamiliar words by using appropriate structural analysis skills.

·  Develop an understanding of the effect of history on literature.

·  Identify structural elements of literature.

Unit Learning Goals: (lesson objectives are in bold)

·  Students will be able to read, discuss, and analyze an epic poem.

·  Students will be able to describe and explain the plot of The Odyssey.

·  Students will be able to recall biographical/historical information about Greek mythology.

·  Student will be able to rewrite scenes from The Odyssey in their own words.

Materials/Resources:

texts, pencils, paper, white board, transparencies, and overhead projector

Time: One day of a 15 day unit

Pre-Assessment: Question students about their knowledge of epic poetry.

Engagement: Hand out rubric/grading slips (or if the copier is broken put the rubric on the overhead and have students write on their own paper) and re-explain what is expected for highly scored presentations.

Activities/Procedures:

Students will give their presentations.

Lesson Modifications:

If more time is needed, presentations can carry over into the next day.

Technology Connections:

An overhead projector may be used.

Closure:

Students will write a short essay explaining some of the information that they have learned from their peers.

Assessment/Evaluation:

There will be an end of book test as well as daily participation grades and activities.
