Set foreground color to black / Open an image, and set your foreground color to black by pressing “d” / 192
Switch Blend mode / Click on the Brush tool, and up the Options Bar, switch Blend mode from Normal to Color. / 192

Start painting / Paint away everything that you don’t want in color, grayscale will be left in its place. / 193

1. Open the working file “banner.psd” from the exercise “Banner Techniques” and view it at 100% / Be sure you don’t open “banner.jpg,” which was your “product version” from the previous exercise. That version no longer has the layers intact.

2. Create new layer / open Layers Pallet (Window > Show Layers)
click page icon (“New Layer”) at bottom of Layers Pallet (or choose Layer > New) / 134

3. Type in text for another part of the title (a very different font) / Be sure you’re on the new layer by checking the Layers Pallet (blue highlight)
Easy way to mix fonts successfully (usually) is to contrast serif fonts with san serif fonts / 313-14

4. Size type after deciding on composition / on the Layers Pallet, select the layer with the type on it

choose desired point size (pt.) from the Character Pallet (or Options bar, see pg. 5)

5. Adjust Leading between lines (on same layer) for both the new type and the old type / with the type highlighted, see Properties Pallet or Character Pallet / 319

6. Adjust Kerning among letters (on same layer) for both the new type and the old type / with the type highlighted, see Properties Pallet or Character Pallet / 318

7. Modify background image for readability and design with text (here, I’m getting rid of excess detail) / choose layer with background image (Layer Pallet)

select area to be cloned with click + alt

8. Color the type (trick: try picking up colors in the photo itself, or from combinations that appear together in nature) / choose background layer (Layer Pallet)
