God Sightings:

Moses and the Burning Bush

Some form of energy

Resting on/surrounding a bush, yet not consuming bush

Not dependent on bush consumption for existence as fire is.

Aware of surroundings, Aware Moses was there.

Could communicate with humans, Gave Moses Instructions

Aware of other events, Called Moses by name without being introduced

First carving of the Ten Commandments

Second Writing of the Ten Commandments

Elijah, Elisha, and the chariot of fire

The transfiguration

The tongues like as of fire on the Day of Pentecost

Paul on the road to Damascus—struck blind. Acts 9:3-9

The great White Throne in Revelation

Paul on the road to Damascus:

Jesus appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus. What Paul observed was a bright light from heaven that shined round about him and caused him to go blind.

Again, whatever this form of energy was, it had the attributes of intelligence and ability to communicate, the same as the “burning bush” that Moses encountered.

Act 9:1 ¶ And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

Act 9:2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

Act 9:3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

Act 9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Act 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: [it is] hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Act 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord [said] unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Act 9:7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

Act 9:8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought [him] into Damascus.

Act 9:9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

“In the beginning, Powers ('Elohiym)”

'Elohiym is the plural form of the word used for the undifferentiated concept of power, energy, force, strength, etc.—theologians use the religious word “God” to express that concept to avoid the science related basic meaning.

“brought into existence,”

Whatever that 'elohiym is, is attributed with the feat of converting that which is not seen into that which is seen—as the writer of Hebrews 11:3 so aptly puts it, “…the world was created…so that what is seen was made out of things which are invisible.” (The universe was made out of a “black hole?” But I digress.)

“the heavens and the earth.”

“the heavens and the earth” is the literal meaning of an ancient Hebrew idiom that means what we think of today as the universe—everything that exists. Actually, the word used here that is translated, “earth,” refers only to the land mass part of what we think of as the planet earth. It is exclusive of the oceans, and does not refer to the planet earth. When Jonah was asked to call upon his higher power ('elohiym,) he described Him as the everlasting (Yĕhovah) energy/power/force/strength ('Elohiym) who made the dry land and the sea, using the exact language used in the tenth verse of the bible where it says, “And God called the dry [land] Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas.” The point here is it is an ancient Hebrew idiom, not an exact description of all that exists—the universe.

This account is found in II Kings 2:11-18 where the occasion is briefly described.

“11 As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind (windstorm) to heaven. 12 Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw Elijah no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 13 He also took up the cloak of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took the cloak of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over. 15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho opposite him saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." And they came to meet him and bowed themselves to the ground before him. 16 They said to him, "Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men, please let them go and search for your master; perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and cast him on some mountain or into some valley." And he said, "You shall not send." 17 But when they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, "Send." They sent therefore fifty men; and they searched three days but did not find him. 18 They returned to him while he was staying at Jericho; and he said to them, "Did I not say to you, 'Do not go'?"
