Starter
Students to do the sheet on the table in front of them. It’s the sheet from the SOW where the students have to identify the terms used to label people. Ask the students how they would say one word in three different ways. Model for themMake sure they understand there is no right or wrong answer.

Ask Kim (New EAL student) what tone means – as a double check that she understands the word.
Look at the word half-caste and explain the meaning, to the students. / Groupings/timing

Introduction
Give the students all the lines from the poem and ask them to group the lines. These will be categories to put the lines into.
Explain that the important thing is that they could go anywhere, how you would explain where you put it based on the language of the line. There is space for them to write down their ideas on the sheet.

Feedback from three students on how and why they would say the lines in this way.
Explain that the lines come from a poem half-caste.
