Subject: TOBACCO

Position Statement/Claim: TOBACCO PRODUCTS SHOULD BE BANNED BECAUSE THEY ARE EXTREMELY HARMFUL TO PEOPLE’S HEALTH, POLLUTE THE ENVIRONMENT, AND COST TAXPAYERS MILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR.

Picture a relentless killer. During the last century, this killer has killed 100,000,000 people. To put that number in perspective, that’s like killing everyone in the state of Georgia ten times over. This killer will take the lives of about 6,000,000 more lives each year. On average, he kills one person every six seconds. And there’s no sign of him changing. “What a monster!” you’re probably thinking. However, despite the toll of bodies on the hands of this murderer, millions of people continue to welcome this monster into their lives, bring him into the home, into contact with their children, they invite him to parties, and even pay for him to do his evil work. Who is this “killer”? Tobacco. This is why I BELIEVE THAT TOBACCO PRODUCTS SHOULD BE BANNED WORLDWIDE BECAUSE they are extremely harmful to our health, they pollute the environment, and they cost tax-payers millions of dollars every year.

First of all, tobacco should be banned because it is a dangerous health issue. Authorities predict that “smoking will have taken 1,000,000,000 lives by the end of the 21stcentury” (WT June, 2014). An editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association said Tobaccoism “the most deadly drug addiction in the United States today and that it is exacting a heavier toll in lives and dollars than cocaine, heroin, AIDS, traffic accidents, murder, and terrorist attacks combined” (JAMA 16). Tobacco causes all types of cancer, emphysema, and heart disease; smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals (43 are known to cause cancer). It also contains nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide, both poisonous gases. What about second hand smoke? Exhaled smoke and smoldering tobacco are highly toxic. Inhaling secondhand smoke can cause cancer and other diseases; each year kills 600,000 nonsmokers, mostly women and children. A report by…
