UCSF SONCenter for Global Health/PIHGAIN Nurse Mentor Job Description

The Global Action to Improve Nursing and Midwifery (GAIN) project is a year-long opportunity basedin Neno district, Malawi. The purpose of the mentorship is to work closely with Malawian nurse colleagues to improve outcomes in maternal child health. The GAIN nurse mentor provides support, clinical care, administrative guidance, and educational opportunities to Malawian nurses. In addition, the GAIN mentor will collect and provide data to the GAIN evaluation officer based at UCSF. The GAIN mentor should be prepared to deliver effective health care in low resource settings and have a deep commitment to equity and justice.

GAIN nurse mentors will spend one year in Malawi at Partners in Health sites in Neno District. GAIN nurse mentorswill provide mentorship to nurse colleagues, students, and other health care professionals and support clinical care systems aimed at improving maternal/child health for vulnerable populations. Ongoing guidance will be provided to GAIN nurse mentors by UCSF School of Nursing faculty.

Nurse Midwife

Major Duties

  • Utilizing the nursing process, manages antepartum, labor and delivery and postpartum care and provides teaching, counseling and support to obstetrical clients in accordance with established clinical practice agreements and in close collaboration with other health professionals.
  • Manages ante-partum, labor, and delivery, newborn, and neonatal care, provides teaching, counseling and support.
  • Works collaboratively with the physician in management of selected complex medical problems in pregnancy, using consultation and referral as appropriated.
  • Provides leadership in comprehensive nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care service to patients and family members, in a variety of settings from community based primary care facilities to medically directed health service.
  • Serves in a teaching capacity in the development of other health care workers and students.
  • Work collaboratively with Malawian clinicians modeling interprofessional clinical care provision. Partner with Malawian nurses to provide direct patient care in the labor and delivery and postpartum wards.
  • Collaborate with the UCSF and Malawian teams to implement educational and clinical improvement programs.
  • Direct didactic and clinical training in various applicable subjects such as management of common health conditions in women and children, leadership development, and quality improvement to Malawian nursing staff
  • Cooperate with entire clinical team in academic and clinical projects aimed at improving patient care provision
  • Participate as part of a team on program monitoring and evaluation

Qualifications

  • One year of full-time experience as a midwife.
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure and willing to complete nursing registration in Malawi
  • Commitment to values of health equity and collaboration
  • Experience working with diverse populations either locally or globally
  • Certification by the American College of Nurse Midwifery or the International Council of Midwifery.

Medical/Surgical, Mother/Child, OB/GYN Clinical Nurse

Major Duties

  • Assesses the biophysical, psychosocial, emotional, educational, spiritual, cultural needs of patients on the unit.
  • Develops a plan of care for individual patient utilizing nursing diagnosis.
  • Formulates nursing interventions based on appropriately identified nursing diagnosis.
  • Operates specialized equipment which may include cardiac monitors, ventilator, defibrillator, pulse oximeter, infusion pumps, warming/cooling devices, central lines, etc. Maintains proper equipment checks with unit policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates outcomes, reassess and revises the plan of nursing care. Consults with physicians and other health care professional on patients to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic assistance and coordinate needs.
  • Participates in education, in-services, certification training(s) and other nursing policy and procedures.
  • Provides comprehensive professional nursing care to patients.
  • Inputs patient care information in manual and automated record systems.
  • Performs procedures, treatments and medication administration.
  • Administers medication orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, topically, etc.
  • Provides instructions to patient and/or family members.
  • Work collaboratively with Malawian clinicians modeling interprofessional clinical care provision

•Minimum of two years of recent RN experience in an inpatient setting

Nurse Practitioner

Major Duties

  • Assesses plans and provides comprehensive and therapeutic medical care.
  • Performs physical examinations and treats common episodic and chronic health care problems with an emphasis on health maintenance and disease prevention through education and counseling.
  • Interprets test results and analyzes all collected data, discriminates between normal and abnormal findings to identify all stages of serious physical, emotional or mental problems, and to prioritize health care needs.
  • Formulates and implements plan of care which may involve various treatment modalities, prescribing medications, consultation with other health care providers, and referrals.
  • Collaborates with other health care professionals to develop treatment protocols, standards of practice and policies.
  • Provides mentoring to students, staff, and other health care professionals as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Active Nurse Practitioner licensure and/or credentialing
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure
  • Current or within one year of hire National Certification in the area of specialty, i.e. ANP, FNP, Geriatric
  • At least 6 months NP experience
  • Possesses the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to successfully perform the duties of the assigned position
