CODE OF CONDUCT (2016)

1. INTRODUCTION

We believe that children have the right to an effective, holistic education and therefore strive to promote an educational environment conducive to learning.

2. OUR VISION

To mould our young people into happy, educated, well balanced individuals and team members of society.

Our mission is to be a centre of excellence through education where students realize their full potential in a stimulating environment in order to enter society with knowledge, integrity and life skills.

5. RIGHTS OF LEARNERS / OBLIGATIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES

Every learner has the right:

·  To be treated fairly and responsibly

·  To receive respect from others and have an obligation to show respect to fellow learners and staff

·  To be taught in a safe and disciplined school environment and the responsibility to uphold school security and be co-operative

·  To be treated with respect by the school community and to show respect in return

·  To express opinions politely and the responsibility to listen to and be tolerant of the opinions of others

·  To security of oneself and one’s possessions and the responsibility to respect others’ personal safety and property and not damage or steal it

·  To basic learning materials and the responsibility to look after school property

·  To work in a clean and healthy environment and the responsibility to ensure that the school premises are kept clean and are not damaged or defaced

·  To proper tuition, regular feedback and promptly marked assignments and the responsibility to take charge of his or her work and completing of projects and homework on time

·  To punctual and consistent lessons and the responsibility to attend them on time

6. SCHOOL RULES AND REGULATIONS

In order to ensure the smooth running of our college, it is imperative that a few rules be put in place:

6.1  PUNCTUALITY AT ALL TIMES IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE

·  If a student is absent from school, we require notification from a parent as to the reason for absenteeism

·  If a student is absent on a day that a test is written, a doctors note must be handed in on his or her return to school

·  It is at the discretion of the educator either to allow the students to write the test on his or her first day back, or to give the class average for that particular test

·  If no doctor’s note is handed in, the student will be given zero for that test or assignment

6.2  DRESS CODE

·  Wearing of school uniform (which includes black or navy bottoms plus a Radley golf shirt or sweater) is mandatory at all times

·  Hair must be clean and neat – no extreme colours or styles

·  No hats / caps to be worn in the classroom

·  No visible piercing will be allowed, with the exception of earrings only

·  Uniform must be neat and clean at all times

·  Comfortable shoes which complement the clothes – no thongs or slippers

6.3  REPORTS AND ACADEMIC PROGRESS

·  Tests are written regularly and progress reports are issued monthly

·  Reports are handed out twice per term

·  Parents’ meetings are held at least once per term – during this meeting the parents have the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress with educators

6.4  COMMUNICATION

·  Parents will be notified by newsletter, e-mail or telephonically of all meetings and events taking place at the college

6.5  SCHOOL FEES

·  It is the responsibility of the parent to pay all fees on time, (by the first day of each month) for twelve months of the year plus enrolment fees

·  A notice period of three months is required for the withdrawal of a child from the school

·  If payment is not met by the stipulated time and arrangements have not been made with the school, the parent will be asked to keep him or her at home until such time as all outstanding accounts have been settled

·  If a learner has been asked to leave the school he/she will forfeit any monies paid for that month, as well as the enrolment fees for the year

·  If payment of the school fees has not been made the school has the right to immediately cancel this contract and demand that the learner leave the school

6.6  INFRINGEMENT OF THE CODE OF CONDUCT

·  Misconduct will be classified into four categories, viz. level 1, level 2, level 3 and level 4 with level 4 being the most serious offence

A. LEVEL 1

·  Failing to attend class on time

·  Leaving class without permission

·  Cheating in class test

·  Failing to complete homework

·  Dishonesty with minor consequences

·  Disruptive behaviour in class

·  Vulgarity on campus to educators and learners

·  Not wearing school uniform

·  Littering

·  Caught in out of bound areas

·  Possession of cigarettes on campus

DISCIPLINARY ACTION

·  Detention on a day and time stipulated by the college.

·  De-Merits

·  Menial task e.g. cleaning classroom

·  Extra work

·  Littering: Spot fine of R5 and learner will have to pick up litter

·  Vulgarity: Detention or R5,00 fine

·  Learner will be sent home to change/parent will be requested to bring uniform to school

B. LEVEL 2

·  Any 2 level 1 misdemeanours

·  Possession or use of tobacco on school grounds or away from school grounds in school uniform or where learner is identifiable with the school

·  Truancy of one or several classes

·  Cheating during examinations

·  Verbally threatening safety of another person

·  Late coming

·  Absenteeism (without doctors note)

DISCIPLINARY ACTION

·  Any level 1 disciplinary action

·  Disciplinary talk with learner

·  Issuing of warning letter and / Consultation with parent

·  Behavioural contract with learner

·  Late coming: Learner will be made to stay equivalent time after school

·  Talk with parent or guardian and zero for test not written on that day

C. LEVEL 3

·  Any 2 level 2 misdemeanours

·  Minor injury to another person

·  Use of alcohol/narcotic substance - Testing positive for drug use

·  Severely disruptive behaviour

·  Possession of a dangerous weapon

·  Vandalism - minor

·  Intimidation of fellow students/educators

DISCIPLINARY ACTION

·  Any level 2 disciplinary action

·  Referral to counsellor, social worker etc

·  Written final warning

·  Severely disruptive behaviour – Remove learner from class. Learner will continue to work in isolation for remainder of period

·  Rehabilitation for drug offenders which may be in the form of regular tests for a period of four weeks, payable and arranged by the parent

·  Disciplinary hearing

·  A period of suspension may be deemed necessary

D. LEVEL 4

·  Any 2 level 3 misdemeanours

·  Threatening a fellow student, teacher or any person on or off of school property either with a weapon (including all sharp or heavy objects which could cause trauma to any person)

·  Extortion of another person’s property

·  Intentionally causing physical injury to somebody

·  Possession of weapons (including all sharp or heavy objects which could cause trauma to a fellow student)

·  Verbal abuse of fellow learners, staff or any person on or off the school property

·  Derogatory behaviour towards fellow learners, staff or any person on or off the school property

·  Gross insubordination

DISCIPLINARY ACTION

·  Any level 3 disciplinary action

·  Referral to relevant outside agency

·  Disciplinary hearing with RAC (Radley Advisory Committee)

·  Immediate two week suspension

LEVEL 5

·  Any 2 level 4 misdemeanours

·  Possession and / peddling of narcotic substances

·  Assault

·  Sexual harassment or abuse

·  Theft / serious vandalism

·  Intentionally using a dangerous weapon

DISCIPLINARY ACTION

·  Any level 4 disciplinary action

·  Immediate deregistration in conjunction with parent consultation

·  Law enforcement authority involvement

·  Radley College is not obliged to refund any part of school fees or enrolment fees paid for the current year in the event of a deregistration of a learner

7. JURISDICTION OF THE CODE OF CONDUCT

This code of conduct is in force:

·  On school property prior to, during and following regular school hours

·  At all school events within and outside regular school hours

·  At all school events held off the school property

·  At all times when the student is wearing uniform, which identifies him with this college.

8. THE SCHOOL RESERVES THE RIGHT TO AMEND OR ADD AN ADDENDUM TO THE CODE OF CONDUCT FROM TIME TO TIME.

9. Please read and sign the agreement over the page and return it to school.
