Overview
This class will be responsible for the operations of the student run business known as Studio 1891. Student 1891 is comprised of those students who are seeking to improve their talents and skills in graphic arts, screen printing and video production.Goals
Every year, Studio 1891 seeks to improve student talent in design, production, marketing, and advertisement. Students will brand Elsinore High School to the community by learning new concepts in product development and marketing.- Students will understand the visual impact of marketing, displays, sales, visual merchandising and product development.
- Students will learn and apply retail/marketing terminology and practice many hands-on skills required of marketing and retail professionals, including ability to produce visual displays, handle cash transactions, and perform inventory control functions.
- Instruction in the concepts of advertising, communications, display/visual merchandising, print operations and product technology.
Requirements
Prerequisites – Graphic Design 1, Screen Printing 1,2, Video Production 1 or teacher approval /Materials
Pencil, paper, and notebook. Course instructor may provide other items as needed.Side Notes
Each student is expected to actively contribute to class discussions, as this mirrors real life business situations and this is the way we all learn from each other. Thus, a component of your grade will be based on your classroom performance.
There will be some class activities that will take place after school hours. Some students will be required to attend these activities as part of their grade. Please notify instructor 24 hours prior to engagement if you can’t make it.
Course Content
Module 1: People
Students will be able to understand the concepts and strategies utilized to determine and target marketing strategies to a select audience.
Module 2: Product
Students will be able to generate product ideas to contribute to ongoing business success.
Module 3: Price
Students will be able to understand concepts and strategies utilized in determining and adjusting prices to maximize return and meet customers’ perceptions of value. Students will develop a foundational knowledge of pricing to understand its role in marketing.
Module 4: Place
Students will be able to manage channel activities to minimize cost and to determine distribution strategies.
Module 5: Promotion
Students will be able to understand the concepts and strategies needed to communicate information about products, services, images, and/or ideas to achieve a desired outcome. Students will acquire a foundational knowledge of promotion to understand its nature and scope.
Module 6: Production
Students will know how to receive apparel orders and designate them to the appropriate channels for in house screen print production.
Evaluation
70% “PARTICIPATIONRESPONSIBILITY”Showing up to class and sharing ideas is essential to brainstorming as a business. In class assignments will assist in this process, which will be graded. This grading criterion is emphasized because CTE students are developing real world-of-work habits and professional skills which will benefit them in gaining and maintaining employment, as well as achieving promotions and raises throughout their careers.

20% “PRODUCT REPs” Students will serve as Product Reps – displaying, advertising, shelving and facing, restocking, and general handling of assigned store products during school or after school.
Students are required to work an amount of in school & out of schooltimes based on the number of students in the class as well as available outof school activities. Store operation times (lunch periods, before/afterschool, events, etc.) will be developed by the students in the class wherebyparticipation will be required. Points will vary once schedule has been established.
10% “PROMOTIONAL PROJECTS” Students will create newpromotional strategies for Studio 1891.
You will have team performance assignments and implement them depending on the schedule of events:
School Theme Promotion (25) Example: Dances, ASB Events, Hello Week, Temescal vs. EHS Game
Studio 1891 Promotion (25). Example: New apparel ideas, sell student work, stickers, socks, towels
Honesty & Integrity
See EHS student handbook.Honesty and integrity is very important in this class.Student workers may handle inventory and cash belonging to Studio 1891.Students caught stealing will face school discipline.
Attendance and Tardiness
Assisting students in establishing lifelong habits of reliability and promptness is an instructional objective in this particular course. Progress toward this goal will be measured, at least in part, by tracking student attendance. Therefore, a student’s grade or credit in this class may be adversely affected by reason of tardiness or absence. See handbook for EHS rules.
