Ian Fleming was born on May 28th 1908 in London. One of four sons, he grew up in an affluent and influential family.

Fleming attended Eton College, one of the England's top schools. He later studied at Sandhurst, the elite military academy.

Before the Second World War, he worked as a journalist for Reuters.

In 1933, he started working as a banker but he found it boring.

In 1939, he became a spy and worked for the British secret services. This job inspired him when he started writing spy novels. Fleming also got married to Anne Rothermere around this time. The couple welcomed their only child, son Caspar, in 1952

In 1953, he wrote his first novel, Casino Royale, in which James Bond appeared for the first time.

Ian Fleming wrote 12 successful novels in which James Bond appeared. Most of his books became successful films, like Goldfinger for example.

Fleming drank and smoked a lot. He died on August 12th 1964 at the age of 56.
