Ready, Set, Teach!

Ms. Amy Weldon

Room CT-105

Course Overview:

Ready, Set, Teach! (Instructional Practices in Education and Training) is a field-based internship that provides students with background knowledge of child and adolescent development as well as principles of effective teaching and training practices. Students learn to plan and direct individualized instruction and group activities, prepare instructional materials, develop materials for educational environments, assist with record keeping, and complete other responsibilities of teachers, trainers, paraprofessionals, or other educational personnel.

Grading

Classroom Activities: 40%

Weekly Field Site Experiences: 45%

·  If you are going to be absent, you MUST contact Ms. Weldon and your mentor teacher before 8:30 AM. Failure to do so will result in a 10 point penalty for that week’s field site grade.

·  Not being in dress code will result in a 10 point penalty in the week’s field site grade for each day out of dress code.

Benchmark: 10%

Participation: 5%

Materials Required

This year we will be compiling a portfolio. You will need a binder with 8 tab dividers. I am also asking for you to bring in a roll of tape (clear or painters), 1 pad of post it notes, and a box of tissue. You may also be asked to provide additional supplies as the year progresses for specific activities.

Academics

Maintaining passing grades is an important part of being in Ready, Set, Teach! You must lead by example. If you are struggling with a class, please seek the extra help by talking with your teacher or me and through tutorials. For each “A” you receive on a progress report, you will receive a teaching ticket. If you attend tutorials and show Ms. Weldon a signature that you attended, you will receive a teaching ticket. It is your responsibility to show Ms Weldon your progress report to receive your teaching tickets. Redemption policy discussed below.

Discipline and Dress Code

RST students are considered role models on both the DHS and elementary school campuses. If a student receives ISS as a punishment, he/she will not be allowed to travel during the days ISS is assigned as well as two additional days. If a student receives ISS for a second time, the student can be removed from the program or have traveling privileges revoked. If a student is suspended, he/she can be removed from the program or have traveling privileges revoked.

Ready, Set, Teach students must follow dress code at all times which includes NO PIERCINGS and no visible tattoos

Attendance

As a part of the RST program, many people depend on your presence on a daily basis. You should think of RST as an internship or job. If you are not going to be able to attend school for whatever reason, it is important for you to notify those who depend on you. You MUST inform both Ms. Weldon and your mentor teacher if you are absent by 8:30 AM. Failure to do so will result in a grade deduction.

Because attendance is important, you will be rewarded for your high attendance. If you do not miss any school during the week, you will be rewarded with a teaching ticket. If you do not have any absences during a nine week period, you will be rewarded with 5 extra tickets. It is your responsibility to claim your teaching tickets on Maintenance Mondays.

If you have excessive absences that are not caused by extenuating circumstances (death in family, severe illness, etc), your traveling privileges may be revoked. Excessive absences are defined as more than 4 days per 9 weeks. Revoking traveling privileges will be determined by Ms. Weldon and one of the Assistant Principals.

Traveling

Traveling with Ready, Set, Teach! to the elementary schools is not a right; it is a privilege that has to be earned. Before a student can begin traveling, they must be in good standing in the class. Behavior and incomplete assignments can cause traveling privileges to be revoked.

All Day Field Site Experiences

Each RST student is eligible for one all day field site experience. RST students have the opportunity to secure additional All Day Field Site Experiences by earning enough teaching tickets as outlined below.

Cell Phones

Ms. Weldon will have a zero tolerance policy for cell phones. I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEM.

Teaching Tickets

This year you will have the opportunity to earn Teaching Tickets for achievements such as discipline, academics, and attendance. Ms. Weldon can also distribute the tickets as she sees fit for random acts of kindness, assistance or just about anything she sees fit. It is your responsibility to keep up with your tickets. Lost tickets will not be replaced.

You can turn these tickets in for the following rewards:

5 tickets - Bottled water and flavoring

10 tickets - Vending machine on Ms. Weldon ($.75)

15 tickets - Vending machine on Ms. Weldon ($1.25)

20 tickets - Skip Assignment

25 tickets - Gator Cup

30 tickets - Skip Maintenance Monday

35 tickets - Field Trip Day (limit 1 per semester)

I have read the Ready, Set, Teach! syllabus and understand the rules and procedures required to be successful in Ms. Weldon’s class.
