Shipwrights’ support to the University of Southampton.Meet the students who are benefiting from the philanthropic support provided by the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights at:

The Heraldry of the Livery Companies of the City of London. Liveryman Richard Goddard has written a book on the Heraldry of the Livery Companies of the City of London and is able to offer a special concessionary price of £35 to his fellow Shipwrights. I enclose the booking form (this time). The heraldic descriptions have been meticulously checked against the official records at the College of Arms by Windsor Herald, who concludes his Preface by saying:

Richard Goddard has now updated the earlier work, known affectionately as Bromley and Child, thereby filling a very useful gap in the literature about the pomp and panoply of the City.

His book not only describes each Company’s heraldry in a wealth of detail and with copious illustrations, but also offers an abbreviated history, tracing its evolution from the formation of a Guild, through the development of a City Company to the ultimate status of a Worshipful Company with Grant of Livery. It is a ‘must have’ for every student of heraldry, for those who are members of the Livery and, indeed, for everyone who has a love of the City of London, its traditions and pageantry.

National Ferry Fortnight dates announcement - Ferry Together 6 – 20 May 2017.Britain’s annual National Ferry Fortnight will this year take place from 6 – 20 May 2017. Now in its ninth year, National Ferry Fortnight is run by Discover Ferries, the industry body for the ferry industry as a two week showcase of Britain’s extensive 75-plus ferry routes and the benefits of travel by sea.

This 2017 Discover Ferries’ National Ferry Fortnight campaign theme is Ferry Together - encouraging family and friends to spend more time together. Research undertaken by Discover Ferries at the beginning of 2017 highlights how little quality time families are spending together due to the hectic nature of modern life. Results showed that the average family spends just three weeks of real quality time together each year, and just 36 minutes on the average week day. In comparison, adults spend almost four times as long - one hour and 55 minutes per day – watching TV or playing on their gadgets. Children are also staring at a screen of some kind for around two hours and 22 minutes a day.

As a result, two thirds of parents say holidays and trips away from home are the only real time they get together. Going out for meals together was found to be the best way of spending quality time together on holiday, followed by doing activities together, the evening entertainment and the journey there. And almost half of those surveyed said the entire holiday counts as quality time.

Bill Gibbons Discover Ferries director said: “Our research has shown just how incredibly important every second of holiday time is in our busy lives. Almost half of the people we surveyed said their whole holiday counts as quality time together. Our members do their utmost to make the ferry journey the very start of the family holiday experience. Unlike an airplane where you’re strapped in alongside each other in front of computer screens, a ferry journey gives people time to stretch their legs, eat a meal together or watch wildlife together. National Ferry Fortnight will be a celebration of ways to spend that treasured time together.”

The 10 members of Discover Ferries are Brittany Ferries, Caledonian MacBrayne, DFDS Seaways, Irish Ferries, Isle Of Man Steam Packet Company, Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, P&O Ferries, Red Funnel, Stena Line and Wightlink. During National Ferry Fortnight 2017 Discover Ferries’ members will be publishing holiday ideas and added-value offers on ferry routes to France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Ireland, Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Isles of Scilly and Scottish islands.

The 2017 Competition is to be held at The Queen’s Club, Palliser Road, London W14 9EQ on Wednesday 6th September 2017, commencing at 11.00am and will be followed by Dinner at 7.30pm. The Feltmakers’ Inter Livery Tennis Competition is held each year in September, normally at The Queen’s Club in London. The Competition is open to all Livery Companies and each Company may enter one or two teams of mixed doubles of which at least one member in each pair will be a member of the Livery. The tournament was oversubscribed in 2016 and Companies are encouraged to submit their teams as soon as is possible to avoid disappointment. The day commences with registration and morning coffee at 11.00am with play commencing promptly at 11.30am. Initially the teams are split into five groups and each team plays against the other teams in their group until 3.00pm. Play is on clay courts with a back up of indoor courts in case of rain. The winners of each group then enter a knock out competition to play for the Feltmakers’ Trophy and other prizes. The losers in each group enter a knock out Plate competition for the Feltmakers’ Plate Cup. The finals of each competition are held at 5.30pm. There is a cash bar before dinner commencing at 7.30pm which is held in the Presidents Room at Queen’s. The dinner is a three course meal with a half bottle of wine included per person. Lord Mayor’s Abseil Challenge. From The Rt Hon the Lord Mayor Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley. On the 8th September I am going to undertake one of the most frightening things that could ever befall a Lord Mayor – I am going to abseil down the Cheese Grater building (all 225 meters) and I am petrified of heights! I am doing this to raise funds for my Lord Mayor’s Appeal that will support LSO Discovery programme, St Paul’s Music Outreach and Music in Hospitals, educating young people, using music to develop the skills and talents that young people need to succeed in 21st century Britain. I would really like you to sponsor me BUT PLEASE DO NOT SPONSOR ME FOR MORE THAN £10 this is really important as I would like to break some records (not any bones or individual wallets) and I know how generous you are to so many charities. What I would really like you to do is pass it on to 5 of your fellow Freemen, Liverymen or friends; there are over 30,000 Liverymen – just imagine the funds I could raise if they all donated £10!
