Dear YourFirstName, and Mr and Mrs YourSurname

We hope all learners are enjoying Computer Studies SG. The aim of the subject is to prepare learners to become employers or employees in a computerised working environment. During this course we aim

to teach the learners to think creatively;

work with fellow learners;

learn about the computer; and

learn to use the computer to solve practical problems.

Computer Studies SG is a course in which two thirds of the marks come from practical work. The learners are expected to complete a number of tasks every week. The tasks cannot be completed in class time therefore the learners should have access to a good computer at home in order to complete their tasks. The school computer room is open four afternoons a week to assist in this regard.

Work taught

All tasks and tests count towards the final year mark. To prepare the learners for the business world they are expected to learn time management. If a learner is absent he/she may submit work via fax or email to school that day. As the work is given out at the beginning of the term there is no need for late work.

All Computer Studies SG lessons are found on the World Wide Web at http://www.wcape.school.za/subject/CS/PHS/index.htm, on the network at school and on the CD-ROM. Parents are encouraged to get involved and learn Computer Studies SG with their children.

If the requirements for Computer Studies SG seem too rigorous it must be remembered that this is an investment in the learner's future. Industry expects that learners who complete the course are competent in using computers. If the requirements and demands are too great, perhaps a change of subject would be a good idea.

A venture being considered is that the learners take their International Computer Driving Licence, starting to write off modules from Grade 10 and completing their licence in Grade 11. Candidates have to pass modules very similar to what is done in Computer Studies SG, therefore it seems a good idea to obtain an ICDL as well as a Matriculation qualification at the same time. This qualification is becoming known and required at many universities and employers.

May we work well together. May the learners go out into the world confident and able to earn a living in a computer environment.

Yours sincerely

Pam Miller
