WHEREAS:This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Thomas J. Robbio on September 8, 2002; and

WHEREAS:Thomas was the beloved son of Menica “Rita” (Gatta) and the late Salvatore Robbio; and

WHEREAS:Thomas’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his brothers Salvatore, Jr. and Stephen; his many nieces and nephews, three great-nieces and one great nephew; and

WHEREAS:Thomas will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it

RESOLVED:That this City Council go on record extending its deepest sympathy to the family of Thomas J. Robbio at this time of such personal loss; and be it further

WHEREAS:It has come to the attention of the City Council that Harvard University has named Ellen Condliffe Lagemann the Charles Warren Professor of the History of American Education and Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education; and

WHEREAS:Ellen received her undergraduate degree from Smith College, before teaching high school social studies in Roslyn, New York. She received her M.A. in social studies from Teachers College, and her Ph.D. in history and education from Columbia University; and

WHEREAS: Ellen, a nationally known historian and expert on education research, has been a professor at New York University since 1994; and

WHEREAS:From 1994 to 2000 she was the Chair of the Department of humanities and Social Sciences, as well as the director of the Center for the Study of American Culture and Education in the School of Education; and

WHEREAS:In April 2000, Ellen Lagemann was appointed president of the Spencer Foundation, a Chicago-based philanthropy that supports research in education, while retaining her faculty appointment at NYU; and

WHEREAS:“Ellen Lagemann is an outstanding historian and scholar of education, and a leader in the effort to convert high-quality academic research into usable tools to improve teaching and learning in the nation’s public schools”; now therefore be it

RESOLVED:That the City Council, go on record congratulating Ellen Condliffe Lagemann in becoming the Charles Warren Professor of the History of American Education and the new Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and wish her continued success; and be it further

WHEREAS:The Bible has been a constant source of moral and spiritual guidance for many people throughout the centuries; and

WHEREAS: The Bible has profoundly influenced art, literature, music and codes of law; and

WHEREAS:The Bible has motivated many to acts of compassion and charity; and

WHEREAS:The Bible continues to provide inspiration, hope and comfort for millions of Americans today; and

WHEREAS:For sixty-two years, women and men of many faiths have banded together with the National Bible Association to sponsor National Bible Week as a time to be reminded of the Bible’s unique place in American life; and

WHEREAS:Bible Week is an annual celebration that encourages the reading of the Bible; now therefore be it

RESOLVED:That the City Council go on record declaring the week of November 24, 2002 – December 1, 2002, to be Bible Week in the City of Cambridge, and encourage all Cambridge residents to participate in this observance; and be it further

RESOLVED:That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to the National Bible Association on behalf of the entire City Council.
