SMART FAQ

What time will we depart?

Please arrive to your respective site by 3:15am on March 19. 2016. SMART Weekend Chavis and Capitol Park students will depart from 971 Harp Street (Capitol Park NOT Chavis) promptly at 4:00am. Rolesville participants will depart from Rolesville Middle promptly at 4:00am.

What time will we return?

Each site will return back to their point of origin at 9:00pm on March 19, 2016.

What type of attire should participants wear?

We request that all current students wear their black “Do the SMART Thing” t-shirt. Each new participant will be provided a black “Do the SMART Thing” t-shirt. Please make sure that every participant wears comfortable, closed toe walking shoes.

Can my child go if I am unavailable to go?

If your student is an active SMART Academy student, parents are recommended but not required to attend because we have an established relationship with your student. However, if your student is new to the SMART Academy, we ask that you plan to attend to experience the SMART Way with your student.

Who can I contact if I have questions while my child is on the SMART Adventure?

Feel free to call (919) 61-SMART. Angela Leach will be available to answer any questions that you may have. If you are part of the Rolesville group, you may call Steve Puls at (919) 307-5544. Participants from either site can contact LaToya Montague at (919) 525-2845.

As a parent, am I able to attend?

Yes, parents are able to attend for an additional fee of $25 or in accordance with any pre-paid promotional offer.

Are there any additional costs?

No. All pre-ordered meals and transportation costs are covered for confirmed students and parents. Parents may be assessed a $25 participation fee, unless it is included in the pre-paid promotional offer.

What if my child needs to be administered medicine?

SMART staff members are not allowed to directly administer medicine. We will secure all medicine and provide it to the student to administer as needed.

Will parents be allowed to do self-guided tours while at the Smithsonian?

No. Our SMART Team has planned an awesome, jam-packed educator guided experience. Therefore, we will not have an opportunity for self-guided tours.

What meals will be provided for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?

●Breakfast will consist of a choice of banana nut muffin, blueberry muffin, or blueberry/strawberry/apple Nutri-Grain bar and orange juice.

●Lunch will consist of a voucher for McDonald’s in the atrium.

  1. Each K-5 student will be provided with a student voucher redeemable for a Happy Meal. Each middle/high school students and parent will be provided an adult voucher redeemable for a regular size meal. Additional restaurants, including Donatos and Boston Market, are available in the atrium at the expense of the participant.

●Dinner will consist of a Subway boxed lunch consisting of a ham, turkey, or veggie sub, chips, a cookie, and bottled water.

What if my child has special dietary needs?

Since all meals have been pre-ordered, we will be unable to provide dining alternatives. Please plan to pack meals to ensure that your child’s dietary needs can be met.

What should I bring?

●We would advise everyone to pack light.

●An umbrella or raincoat.

●Any necessary medicines

●Snacks for in-between meals as needed.

●Money for the Gift Shop (optional)

Electronics and Valuables

Electronics are permitted are the sole responsibility of the participant. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Being SMART at the Smithsonian

●Every participant will walk through metal detectors. All bags and purses are searched by hand. To minimize hand searches of bags, we advise everyone to avoid bringing purses and bags or agree to leave them on the bus.

●Photography is permitted. Feel free to take as many pictures as you would like.
