Title / Make up steel framing for a canvas fabrication application

Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the canvas fabrication industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to make steel framing; measure and mark out steel framing; and make and assemble steel framing.

Explanatory notes

1Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and local body regulations.

2Definition

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

3Any relevant engineering consent approvals must be followed where appropriate.

Outcome 1

Prepare to make steel framing.

Evidence requirements

1.1Job specifications are identified and verified in accordance with company and legislative requirements.

1.2Tools and equipment suitable for making frames are identified and used in accordance with the manufacturer specifications and legislative requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – welding equipment, drill, clamps, measuring equipment, metal cutting equipment, markers, pop riveter.

1.3A suitable area to make and assemble the framing is identified in accordance with company requirements.

1.4Frame material is selected in accordance with manufacturer and job specifications, and legislative requirements.

Outcome 2

Measure and mark out steel framing.

Evidence requirements

2.1Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; environmental safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety.

2.2Frame is measured and marked out in accordance with job specifications, and all markings are legible.

2.3Frame supports are measured and marked out in accordance with job specifications, and all markings are legible.

Outcome 3

Make and assemble steel framing.

Evidence requirements

3.1Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety; safety of other people; workshop safety; environmental safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety.

3.2Material is cut and shaped, and all measurements are accurate in accordance with job specifications and legislative requirements.

3.3Drilling is carried out in accordance with job specifications and legislative requirements.

3.4Frame is laid out and clamped in preparation for assembly in accordance with job specifications and legislative requirements.

3.5Pillars to suit exterior cladding are fitted in accordance with job specifications and legislative requirements.

3.6Reinforcing and bracing are added to frame as necessary in accordance with job specifications and legislative requirements.

3.7Assembly of frame is carried out, and frame is joined in accordance with job specifications and legislative requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – welding, mechanical fastenings, adhesives.

3.8Frame alignment measurements are checked and comply with the job specifications.

3.9Anti-corrosion treatment is carried out on the metal in accordance with job specifications and company requirements.

3.10Made-up fabric is fitted on frame in accordance with job specifications and legislative requirements.

3.11Tools and equipment are returned to their places and the work area is cleaned in accordance with company requirements.
