THEME: Assessment and decision - making regarding sibling placement
This two day workshop is aimed at strengthening practitioners' skills in undertaking sibling assessments and making decisions as part of permanency planning within the framework of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. Using systemic approaches, the workshop will invite participants to develop their understanding and skills in preparing for and carrying out sibling assessment and decision -making, as well as offering the opportunity to explore post - placement support.

  • Independent Reviewing Officers and
  • Fostering & Adoption Panel members

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the workshop participants will:
  • Have an overview of legislation, research and context for working with siblings
  • Have considered the significance of sibling relationships
  • Have identified some key areas in assessing siblingrelationships
  • Have considered the issues relating to contact for siblings separated through fostering or adoption
  • Have considered the skills, capacities and support needs of carers /parents of siblings in alternativefamily settings
  • Have an understanding of the application of systemic approaches in assessment and decision making in sibling placement
Trainer – Adrian Perkins – Associate Trainer AFA Cymru
Adrian Perkins brings his experience as a lawyer and psychotherapist together in delivering this workshop. Adrian is an experienced counsellor and family and systemic psychotherapist. Adrian also has extensive experience advising social work practitioners and local authority decision – makers as a lawyer in public law children proceedings, developing a special interest in adoption during his legal career.
