PS 158K, partnered with The Trey Whitfield School, propose “East New York, Then and Now,” to improve student achievement in ELA.
“East New York, Then and Now” will feature 4th grade students producing a website and podcasts that show changes in their neighborhood over time. Students will be involved in creating a Montage of Photos of the Neighborhood. Through research, students will compare streets, shops, stores, houses of worship etc., then and now. In addition, students will take walking tours of the neighborhood taking digital pictures that best demonstrate these changes. Students will develop their own music to accompany the Montage using Garage Band. The picture Montages and music will be turned into downloadable podcasts which will be housed on their website. Another section of the website will house a Time Capsule. Students will leave favorite toys, books, clothing and games with writing explaining what the item is used for, and why it is being included. This capsule will be opened in 10 years.
All student created activities about the “East New York, Then and Now” website will be aligned to New York State ELA Standards.
In order to facilitate the objectives of the “East New York, Then and Now,” project, teachers will be involved in after school staff development, push in project support, as well as Local and/or Regional Peer Review sessions. The Peer Review process is a NYS professional development initiative designed to help teachers improve the achievement of all students by enhancing teachers’ abilities to provide quality instruction based on the New York State Learning Standards. This project will culminate with teachers preparing Learning Experience Outlines to present at Local/Regional Peer Review Sessions as a way to assess the validity of the project and help teachers improve classroom instruction based on the New York State Learning Standards.
