Renewable Energy 2010

“Advanced Technology Paths to Global Sustainability”

PACIFICO YOKOHAMA, YOKOHAMA, JAPAN, 27 June – 2 July 2010

More than 1300 specialists from 65 countries gathered to Pacifico Yokohama, in the city of Yokohama, Japan in order to contribute to the progress of wide range of Renewable Energy technologies and to promote sustainable and renewable energy markets. Attendees agreed with the following fundamental understandings and proposals to show our direction to the world.

· Since the beginning of this series of conference (Renewable Energy 2006 in Makuhari, Japan, Renewable Energy 2008 in Busan, Korea), we have observed a historic change in the world of energy.

· The Fourth Assessment Report from IPCC issued in 2007 confirmed the relation between global climate change and CO2 emission by human activity. Following analysis demonstrated that it is technically and economically feasible to move along a 450ppm scenario. Now, it is well recognized that renewable energy and energy efficiency are the most essential keys towards sustainable world in the latter half of this century. IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) has been established, and various “green” policies have been announced by the governments of major countries.

· Renewable energy market is explosively expanding and installation of renewable energy in the world is being accelerated, especially in the Asian region. Wind power has doubled and photovoltaics has almost quadrupled during 2006-2009. However, renewable energy in the total energy usage still stays small, and needs to be even more accelerated to bear a considerable fraction of the total energy in the middle of this century.

· Advanced and innovative technologies are required to accelerate the penetration of renewable energy by reducing cost further and improving efficiency and reliability of renewable energy. Approach to dramatically high efficiency of photovoltaics has been discussed in this conference (e.g.,~40%). Not only individual renewable energy technologies, but also the integration with energy storage and management of the integrated system has become more and more important to realize zero-emission houses or the low carbon community.

· At the same time, strong policy frameworks will be required in order to secure the necessary contribution from enhanced deployment of renewable energy. That will benefit both security of energy supply and economic growth.

· We, the specialists involved in the field of renewable energy technologies and their policies, accept the technical challenge and contribute to grow the renewable energy market to realize a sustainable world with high quality of life in this century.

· We, the attendees here, wish to meet again at the next occasion of this Renewable Energy Conference in 2012 somewhere in Asia.
