SITE BASE TEAM MINUTES APRIL 22, 2014

Present: Coffey, Owen, Stewart, Lord, Dill, Todd, Pepperman, Foster, Lenis, Harvey, Weste

WELCOME AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES:

Dr. Harvey welcomed everyone. Stewart made a motion to approve the minutes from our last meeting, (January) Dill seconded the motion.

  1. COMPUTER DISCUSSION

Ms. Todd shared a proposal regarding the expectations and consequences for student Chrome books for next school year. See below to view proposal. The issue seems to be that students are not bringing their laptops/chargers to school.

The MMS student handbook currently states:

Student Preparedness

A. Go to class prepared with books, pencils, paper, laptop and keep up with all of your property. Failure to bring proper materials to class or complete homework or class assignments may result in disciplinary action.

*UCPS currently does not have a policy in place for Chrome book expectations/consequences. This is to be handled at the school level.

In order to “SOAR” students must be prepared.

Chrome book Expectations:

  • Students are expected to bring their Chrome books to school every day.
  • Chrome books should be fully charged at the beginning of the school day, as our classrooms are not equipped for charging multiple machines.
  • Students should have their chargers with them each day.
  • Students should not loan their chargers or Chrome books to other students.

Consequences:

If a student does not have his or her Chrome book due to machine repair, then he/she may use a loaner from the media center. Loaner machines are to be checked out each morning by teachers.

Homeroom teachers will perform “Chrome book checks” each morning to ensure that all students are prepared for class.

If a student does not have his or her Chrome book because they left their charger/Chrome book at home the consequences are as follows:

  • 1st Time: Warning and Paper/Pencil Alternative Assignment (Provided by teacher)
  • 2nd Time: Silent Lunch and Phone Call Home (The parent must bring the chrome book to school.)
  • 3rd Time: Phone Call Home and Saturday School (The parent must bring the chrome book to school.)
  • 4th Time: Saturday School and Parent Conference
  • 5th Time: Suspension

Ms. Dill reported that some of her teachers proposed that each teacher have a classroom set of laptops in the room. She also mentioned that in her room when the students do not bring their machines, they are required to work from workbooks as an alternative assignment.

Stewart stated that he is in favor of Chrome Book checks.

Harvey stated that teachers who use laptops on a regular basis do not seem to have as big of a problem with students not bringing machines to school.

Dr. Harvey asked that site base team representatives share this proposal with their colleagues at their grade level meetings, and get feedback to Miss Todd by Wednesday.

  1. “START OUT SOARING” NIGHT THURSDAY MAY 8TH (FOSTER)

This program will be for Rising 7th and 8th Graders (Predominately Sun Valley) who are redistricted to MMS. It will be on May 8th. We will introduce them to MMS procedures and how we operate.

6:00-6:15 in Gym

6:15-6:40: Elective teachers will showcase what they offer through their programs. Each related arts teachers will get three minutes to talk about their program.

6:45-7:30: Will be split in two groups. Half will be in classrooms with teachers talking about PBIS, Curriculum, Expectations, etc.

The other group will be in media center /cafeteria for registration.

All 7th, 8th Grade and Related Arts teachers need to be here that night.

Todd and Lord suggested that parents should have a card that tells them where to go when they leave gymnasium. Todd suggested a rotating schedule.

Suggestions were made to have different break-out sessions so that parents have a choice in where to go.

It was suggested that selected teachers take parents on tours of 700 and 800 hallway.

The following were the main points: rotation schedule, fewer break-out sessions, and extend the program till 8:00. Dr. Harvey asked Acker, Lord, Foster, Dill, and Todd to look at logistics and see how it will work. The team should be ready to share with seventh and electives next week.

Dr. Harvey also asked Ms. Todd to post the finalized scheduled on the MMS Facebook page and on the MMS web site.

  1. SCHEDULE DISCUSSION

Three minute transition schedule:

Lord:

The goal of both schedules is to not have grade levels transitioning at the same time. With three minute transition all classes have same amount of instructional time. Student success will be at same time. Lunch and planning will be at the same time. With four minute transition, some of the elective classes are cut by four minutes. The three minute one flows better because elective classes are all the same amount of time.

Harvey says three minute transitions are too short and five minutes is too long. Four minutes is fine, though the shortened time for related arts is hard. Students will get six bathroom passes at the beginning of each six weeks. Harvey also says that we may not have enough lockers for the amount of students we will have next year. One grade may not have lockers. If it was sixth grade, they would have to go back and get their book bags before going to related arts classes. The administration is working through the locker issue.

Harvey asked that both bell schedules be shared with teams. Site base members should email Dr. Harvey their grade level vote by Friday.

  1. STUDENT HANDBOOK

There were no handbook additions or concerns.

  1. DRESS CODE

We have made amendments to fleece, hoodies, full zip jackets, etc. Some Sun Valley parents have asked about wearing spirit wear every day. They also have an issue with the shirts having collars.

Dress code has already been amended within this school year. The site base team recommends no changes.

Dr. Harvey reviewed the major points from the meeting.

  • Share computer proposal with team and get back with Todd by Wednesday.
  • Lord, Acker, Foster, and Todd work out logistics of “Soaring Night”. The night will be on May 8th from 6:00 to 8:00.
  • Share bell schedules and send grade level votes to Dr. Harvey.

The meeting was adjourned.
