Creating your own Myth

You are going to create your own Myth!

Remember that a myth is a story that is used to explain something in nature, like why it rains, or why there is evil, or why there are different seasons. We have read many examples in class.

Step 1: Brainstorm

What is the lesson about something in nature that you want to explain?

Who is the god goddess that is the protagonist of the story?

What is their special power?

What is their weakness?

Who is the antagonist god or goddess in the story?

What is their special power and weakness?

What trick is played on either a god/goddess or the human?

How does the story end

Sample Myth- The Fog in San Francisco

The great god Dinublius sat upon his throne On Mount Tamalpais. He was a good and happy god, for he was the god of happiness. The gods bestowed upon him beautiful hair and glasses, and a great collection of sweaters with holes in them. His special power was being able to stay happy throughout difficult situations, and always seeing the good in bad situations.

All was not happy on Mount Tamalpais though. The evil goddess of sadness, Dargenithes, was lurking in the shadows. She was the goddess of all sadness in the world. She was only three feet tall, with terrible skin and bad hair. Some say the reason she is so sad is because she is angry that the gods made her so short. She wenat around playing tricks on people and ruining their day.

One day, Dargenithes decided to play a trick on Dinublius. She knew what his weakness was: food. Dinublius loved to eat all day long. That was part of the reason that he was so happy. Doughnuts, chocolate, pizza, sushi, curry, he loved it all. Every day the people of Mount Tamalpais would bring him delicious things to eat, such as cookies, waffles, bacon, and pineapples.

Dargenithes came up with an idea to make Dinublias sad: she would throw him a huge feast where she would have a huge roasted pig. Then, at the last minute, she would steal the pig away and eat it all for herself!

Dargenithes then went about making plans for the party. She advertised it on many websites and in local papers. "Come to the party to honor Dinublius! The greatest god there ever was!" said the advertisement. It was going to be the biggest part Mt. Tamalpais had ever seen! There was going to be tacos, enchiladas, burgers, nuggets, and milkshakes! And the biggest roasted pig ever! Everyone was talking about it with excitement.

This made Dinublius very happy. He thought that his long feud with Dargenithes was finally coming to an end, and they would make peace, and there would be no more nagging by her.

Finally the day came. The party was a huge success! Everyone was having a great time. Dinublius was joyfully eating and drinking, while the goddess McHughvius was singing and dancing for everyone. Dargenithes was building a huge fire for the roasted pig. It was an enormous fire, the biggest the gods ever saw.

They put the pig on the fire and began to roast it. Everyone's mouth was watering thinking about how good it was going to taste. Slowly, slowly, the pig turned and turned, until it became a dark red color.

Finally it was done. Dargenithes started to make her speech. "People of Mt. Tamalpais! We are here to honor the god Dinublius for all the happiness he has brought to the kingdom. But I have tricked you! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!" As she was laughing, she picked up the pig and flew away.

Dinublius was in shock. Everyone was screaming "Nooooo!" with great sadness. Then, the unthinkable started to happen. Dinublius began to great tears as big as rocks. The tears were as big as snowballs. They were so big, that they started to fall on top of the fire that the pig was roasting on! When the tears hit the fire, huge clouds of smoke started to billow up from it. The clouds of smoke from Dinublius's tears started to float across the kingdom for miles around.

Even today, when it is foggy in San Francisco, people still say that Dinublius is still crying over the pig that Dargenithes stole from him!
