Indian River County School District - Literacy Events
Ongoing District Events / · Community Book Marks – students are decorating book marks to be distributed in the community. The bookmarks will promote Literacy Week!
· Video Recorded Books – District staff and community volunteers will read a favorite book or excerpt from a novel. These readings will be video recorded and highlighted on the District Website. Recorded books will be available to teachers to use during Literacy Week and beyond.
· Literacy Week Challenge – Schools will create a video presentation to create excitement and promote Literacy Week. Schools will then challenge other schools to do the same (similar to the “Ice Bucket Challenge).
Ongoing School Events / · Guest Readers – throughout the week schools have invited special guests to share their favorite books with students and encourage students to be lifelong readers.
· Door Decorating Contests –Many schools in the district are planning door decorating contests to promote reading.
· Mystery Book – three clues to the title of the mystery book on the announcements. Students will use the clues to determine the book. The title will be announced on the announcements the next morning. – Rosewood Magnet, Storm Grove Middle
· Book Buddies – Intermediate grade classes will buddy with a primary class to read together. – Citrus Elementary, Liberty Magnet
· Caught You Reading – tickets distributed by faculty to students and redeemed – Storm Grove Middle
· Library Card Day- A representative from the public library will be available to sign students up for library cards. – Storm Grove Middle.
Monday,
Jan. 26 / · Million Minute Marathon –Schools will participate in the “Million Minute Marathon. “ Students throughout the district will read for additional time which will be recorded and submitted for the statewide marathon.
· Chalk It Up – Students and teachers use chalk to draw book jackets of their favorite books on the sidewalk. –Pelican Island Elementary
· STEM Based Books – each grade will read and experience a book integrated with STEM activities. – Beachland Elementary
· Scholastic Book Fair – Sebastian Elementary
· Rosewood App – students create a rap, song, or poem that reflects what he/she/class has learned about a core knowledge topic.
· Staff Video Reading – The Cat in the Hat – Liberty Magnet School
Tuesday,
Jan. 27 / Eat a Book – each grade level will focus on a book that deals with food. Students will enjoy a snack while reading their book (ex: How to Eat Fried Worms) – Glendale Elementary,
Reading is Cool Day – students may wear their sunglasses and bring a small towel to have a Booknic with their class. – Pelican Island Elementary
Guest Reader – Mayor Gilmore from the City of Sebastain – Liberty Magnet
Book Drive – students bring in books new or used to be distributed to students throughout the count. – Storm Grove Middle
Wednesday, Jan. 28 / Reading Rocks – Wear Your Crazy Socks Day – Fellsmere Elementary
Pass the Book – Each class will write the beginning of a story and pass it to another class to complete. – Glendale Elementary
Author Visit – Local author Nacilee Wydra visits to write with students in first grade. – Beachland Elementary
Vocabulary Parade – Sebastian Elementary
Dress as Your Favorite Book Character – Prizes and awards presented to students who most look like a character. – Storm Grove Middle

Jan. 29 / Character Parade – Dress as your favorite book character – Glendale Elementary
Author Visit – D.G. Stern visits and speaks to students. – Beachland Elementary
Author Visit – a local author will visit to talk about their current book and inspire students develop a love of reading for pleasure. – Storm Grove Middle
Friday,
Jan. 30 / Athletes are Readers Too –Wear your favorite jersey and view video of University of Georgia football player with his book club. – Fellsmere Elementary
Fabulous Finds – As you read be on the lookout for a fascinating and fantastic word to share with your class.
Annual Dad’s Super Bowl Lunch – Dads are invited to read to classes in the morning and stay for lunch
