BBYO SHABBAT AND OTHER

HOLIDAY POLICY

SHABBAT IS A DAY OF REST AND ALL PROGRAMMING ON THAT DAY SHOULD REFLECT THIS SPIRIT. SHABBAT SHOULD BE A TIME FOR FUN AND REFLECTION. IT SHOULD NOT BE SEEN AS A SERIES OF "DON'TS" BUT SOME EXCITING CHALLENGES FOR "DO'S."

1. Business (including elections) must be conducted by BBYO chapters on a day other than Shabbat. Shabbat shall be a time for worship, contemplation, educational programs, and other activities harmonizing with the spirit of Shabbat.

2. BBYO members are encouraged to attend services in synagogues or temples of their choice, but BBYO may hold services outside of the synagogue or temple on Shabbat or religious holidays.

3. BBYO shall not sponsor anything other than a religious service at the same time services are usually held in synagogues on Shabbat. However, an Oneg Shabbat-type program could follow such a service on those days. Chapters are permitted to hold an Oneg Shabbat following services, provided that these programs are in keeping with the spirit of Shabbat and deal with some aspect of Jewish culture, religion, or social awareness.

4. BBYO shall arrange formal group travel on days other than Shabbat. When an activity begins on Saturday evening, BBYO shall provide facilities for those who arrive prior to sundown on Friday.

5. Athletic tournaments or league activities shall take place on days other than Shabbat. This applies to tournaments and leagues, not to less formal recreational activities.

6. BBYO groups may perform direct community service on Shabbat, such as visiting hospitals, orphanages, homes for the aged, etc.

7. Fundraising activities shall take place on days other than Shabbat.

8. Programming on holidays shall be avoided unless the activities are for the purpose of observing the holiday.
