Dale Smith
Dale Smith has been a freelance journalist in the Canadian Parliamentary Press Gallery since 2008,andis the author of The Unbroken Machine: Canada’s Democracyin Action [Dundurn Press, 2017]. His news reports and columns have appeared in Reuters, The Law Times, The National Post, Maclean’s and many other publications. His interest in politics began in high school, when he served as a page in the Alberta Legislature.
As an introduction to the theme of his talk on “The Maple Crown”, he says: “Most people don’t understand that the Canadian monarchy is a separate and unique institution, but, as a unique Canadian institution, it is under threat. Politicisation of the monarchy by the former government, and a waning interest in doing royal tours by the younger generation of the royal family have put us in the position that Canadians must do more to assert their unique monarchy before it fades into obscurity.”
