Zaha Hadid selects Architectural Jeweller Ute Decker forShowcase at Goldsmiths’ Fair
London, July 2014 - Zaha Hadid is to guest curate a showcase of personal highlights from this year’s Goldsmiths’ Fairin London.Zaha Hadid Selectswill feature21 masterpieces from leading creators of contemporary jewellery and silver objects.
One of the highlights selected by Zaha Hadid is a pair of ear sculptures by the internationally acclaimed architectural jeweller Ute Decker. Enchanted by a stay in Japan, Decker was inspired to create the minimalist wearable sculptures in 18 ct Fairtrade gold titledIn Praise of Shadows(pictured) - anhomage to Junichiro Tanizaki’s classic essay celebrating the aesthetics of shadows in Japanese architecture and craft.
Decker’s jewellery is a meditation on the richness of simplicity. She sculpts space, movement, and texture, creatingan interplay of light and shadow. This essential purity is typical of her work in its minimalism and attention to detail.
Decker is a pioneer of the ethical jewellery movement, carefully choosing recycledmetals and artisanal Fairtrade gold for her one-off and limited edition pieces that can be best described as wearable sculptures.
These conversation pieces are not only artistic but also political statements.
“I see jewellery as a medium to tell a story
- to express that ethics and aesthetics can be combined
to create a beautiful object with a deeper meaning.”
Zaha Hadid Selectswill be unveiled at the opening of the Goldsmiths fair. Held over 2 weeks, each week showcases a different set of makers.Ute Decker will be exhibiting during Week One, 22 – 28 September.
In addition, Decker’s work is currently on view atthe Venice Architecture Biennaleas well the Crafts Council’s touring exhibition Space Craft: Architecture Meets Making. In October, her work is featured in the 30th anniversary exhibition at Lesley Craze, London’s leading gallery for contemporaryjewellery, and during the last weekend in November Deckeropens her studiodoors during the bi-annual Cockpit Arts Open Studios in Bloomsbury.
